Position Summary:

KPCC is looking for an associate editor to join the LAist team. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker who puts the audience first and understands how we can best serve them across our web, social and mobile platforms. You ask yourself on a regular basis, "Why would anyone care about this story?" Then you use that answer to help give each story a fighting chance online.

This is primarily an editing role, but you'll need excellent news judgement, superior writing skills and the ability to write a great headline. You should also be comfortable quickly responding to breaking news.

Most importantly, you bring a Southern California sensibility. We love this place and embrace L.A. as the most dynamic city in the country. We are looking for someone who is deeply committed to shining a light on its challenges, opportunities and connecting diverse communities in meaningful conversation.

This is a temporary full-time position for three months.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Generate and develop strategies that will help grow a loyal digital audience for LAist and KPCC under the direction of the Senior Digital Editor and Managing Editor.
  • Assist with planning day-to-day story coverage for LAist.
  • Collaborate with the news producers, reporters, editors and external media partners on coverage.
  • Edit breaking news and other daily stories.
  • Maintain social media channels, ensuring timely and engaging content across all accounts.
  • Coach and edit reporters, producers and other staff in the newsroom to write with voice.
  • Work with social media editor to execute station's engagement strategy.
  • Use analytics (ie: Chartbeat, Google Analytics) to make data-informed decisions that help grow traffic and engagement.
  • Uphold the station's editorial standards, voice and style on all digital platforms.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field; OR equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years' experience in digital journalism, social media engagement and content production.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Strong news judgment and interest in local and regional news.
  • Outstanding writing skills, particularly for digital platforms. We expect to see writing samples.
  • Ability to tell stories in different ways on different platforms.
  • Deep understanding of social media (ie: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
  • Broad knowledge of digital storytelling tools and trends.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues in multiple departments/divisions.
  • Knowledge and fluency with AP style and usage.
  • Basic knowledge of SEO, particularly for headlines.
  • Ability to use analytics to drive decision-making.
  • Experience working with content management systems.
  • Basic familiarity with Photoshop or another photo editing software.
  • Ability to work with changing deadlines and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to work shifts of early morning or late evening hours, as necessary.
  • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

    • Required to move about in an office environment and sit for extended periods of time.
    • Frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes and simple grasping.  
  • Working Conditions: 
    • Moderate noise level.
