Who We Are:

Minnesota Public Radio|American Public Media ("MPR|APM") is one of the premier public media organizations in the country. Minnesota Public Radio operates a 45-station radio network serving nearly all of Minnesota and parts of surrounding states. Reaching 1 million listeners each week, MPR and its three regional services' MPR News, Classical MPR and The Current' produce programming for radio, digital and live audiences. Programs produced by MPR's national programming division, American Public Media, reach 21 million listeners via nearly 1,000 radio stations nationwide each week.  

Your Role:

As the Development Officer, Institutional Giving, you are a member of MPR|APM's Philanthropic Development division which raises approximately $26 million annually (including capital campaign fundraising). The mission of Philanthropic Development's Institutional Giving Department is to build and sustain MPR|APM's capacity for quality programming by securing competitive philanthropic revenue and helping ensure the success of grant-funded programs.

In this position you will lead the cultivation, acquisition, and management of grants, corporate sponsorships and other philanthropic gifts for the Glen Nelson Center, MPR|APM's technology needs, the APM Research Lab, and other programs as needed, with a special focus on corporate philanthropic revenue and developing external corporate relationships. You will work closely with leadership to cultivate and manage relationships with funders and prospects, to secure financial support, and to ensure cross division philanthropically-funded activities are successfully implemented. Additionally, you will work collaboratively as part of a small team focused on institutional giving, and with MPR|APM's individual giving, membership, and underwriting teams to strategically manage and maximize our relationships with a wide community of supporters.  

Position Responsibilities:

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and grow philanthropic revenue, particularly new corporate revenue, to achieve revenue targets of at least $1-2 million annually to support the organization's operational and campaign budgets, focusing on the Glen Nelson Center, MPR|APM's technology needs, the APM Research Lab, and other programs as needed.
  • Build relationships with key corporate and other philanthropic contacts. Initiate, organize, and conduct activities designed to build and sustain strong external relationships.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of corporate giving, business trends, and MPR|APM's programs in order to accurately and persuasively communicate investment options to current and prospective donors.
  • Ensure cultivation and stewardship communication is maintained with key contacts and corporate supporters to foster investment.
  • Represent MPR|APM in networks of philanthropic and corporate professionals, attending formal and informal gatherings as appropriate.
  • Maintain record of contacts in Salesforce and provide regular reports and financial projections and results toward fundraising goals.
  • Build strong working relationships with other MPR|APM departments and contribute positively to overall Institutional Giving and Philanthropic Development efforts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in development in one or more areas of interest, including: media, arts, civic affairs, and public policy.
  • Proven track record of identifying, securing, managing and renewing philanthropic corporate and foundation support.
  • Familiarity with project management concepts and tools.
  • Experience in budget preparation, analysis, and monitoring.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills.
  • Leadership qualities of presence, confidence, judgment, and integrity are required to command the respect and response of colleagues, senior executive personnel, and external partners.
  • Must be able to synthesize complex ideas and activities into coherent and compelling narratives.
  • Must be an accomplished relationship builder with the capacity to act independently to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a sophisticated constituency.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Active network and demonstrated success with the corporate philanthropic community and knowledge of corporate social responsibility trends and practices.
  • Knowledge of public radio, or experience in other non-profit media a major advantage.
  • Proven success in establishing and meeting fundraising goals.
  • Experience with Salesforce or fundraising/sales software.
