Who We Are:

American Public Media is the largest station-based public radio organization in the U.S., combining multi-regional station operations, national content creation and distribution in one organization. Its multi-regional station operations include 49 public radio stations and 42 translators in the Upper Midwest and California. American Public Media produces a slate of award-winning podcasts including Terrible, Thanks for Asking, The Hilarious World of Depression, The Slowdown and Brains On!  The department is growing quickly and adding shows every season.  We make podcasts for curious listeners.  Our shows explore new ideas, uncover truths and tell human stories.

Job location: preferred St. Paul, MN (but could be located in Los Angeles or NY)

Your Role:

As the Podcast Editor, you will edit new and existing podcasts produced by APM. You'll work closely with the podcast development team to review and approve podcast proposals. In this role, you will assist podcast producers in developing storylines and determining focus for individual episodes and podcast seasons. You'll also review scripts and rough mixes on both a global and a line-by-line basis, ensuring that APM's podcasts are captivating, innovative and enlightening for audiences. 

Position Responsibility:

  • Edit new and existing podcasts and digital content.
  • Work with APM Podcast staff to develop new podcast concepts.
  • Work with APM Podcast development staff to determine which podcasts pitches to approve or acquire.
  • Work with producers and digital staff to determine content for web site.
  • Collaborate with editorial partners.
  • Produce occasional audio pieces for podcasts. 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, English or related field.
  • Four or more years experience editing, reporting or producing.
  • Experience editing podcasts or other audio journalism. 

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: 

  • Well-established depth of reporting skills; and an understanding of the need for interpretative reporting on often complex and many-layered issues
  • Superior abilities in creating story ideas, writing, editing, producing and reporting
  • Strong leadership skills, including decisiveness, fairness, empathy, and ability to accept feedback and criticism.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team
  • Ability to bring out producers' excellence with firmness and genuine encouragement.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Creative field and studio production skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal communications skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Facility with digital audio editing equipment. 

Preferred Skills and Experience: 

  • Contacts with national producers.
  • Experience editing podcasts for national audiences.
