Position Summary:

Marketplace is the largest multi-platform content-producer of American Public Media Group.  The Manager, Financial Planning and Analysis contributes to the success of Marketplace not only by leading the forecasting, annual budgeting and monthly reporting and analysis processes for all expenses and revenues related to the Marketplace enterprise, but also by providing value-added financial assessments that aid smart, fact-based business decisions. This position is responsible for monitoring cost and revenue trends, identifying business risks and opportunities and partnering with business heads to provide dynamic financial decision support. This position has two direct reports that support Financial Analysis, Accounts Payable, and Treasury functions. While the Manager-Financial Planning and Analysis Marketplace reports directly to the APMG Controller, the position functions in a matrix organizational structure and takes direction from multiple leaders including the Marketplace Chief Operating Officer, making it critical to collaborate and coordinate all efforts. This is a varied and challenging role where financial analysis and accounting skills are both required for success. Marketplace enjoys a team culture but there is also a great deal of autonomy in this role and this position will work directly with leaders across Marketplace and Finance.


Position Responsibility:

  • Leads Financial Planning and Analysis, providing financial leadership and direction for the Marketplace enterprise including
    • All revenues attributable to Marketplace, including support for revenue areas to help maximize revenue potential and evaluate variances.
    • Annual expense budgeting process for content and enterprise areas under SVP of Marketplace, including Broadcast Operations, Audience Development, Development, and On-Demand.
    • Monthly forecasting and reporting, with support from Financial Analyst II; drive continuous improvement in the forecasting and monthly reporting processes for the Marketplace portfolio. Adapt the planning and analysis processes to work effectively at Marketplace.
    • Monthly Enterprise Operating Report to MP COO to track enterprise performance over the year
    • Analyze key cross-sections of the business, e.g. podcasts, anchor packages, events, core shows.
    • Ad hoc reporting and analysis.
    • A significant role in long-term business planning, analysis of potential partnerships and valuation for potential investments in Marketplace's long-term growth.
    • Monitors and manages Shanghai operational risk and reporting.
  • Contributes to the vision and strategy for Finance support of Marketplace, in conjunction with Controller and Marketplace COO.
  • Develops effective, collaborative relationships with all business decision makers to:
    • insert Finance into conversations early in the review process for new initiatives;
    • identify and pursue opportunities to improve business performance through thorough analysis of data, conversations with business leads and overall understanding of what Marketplace does;
    • For budget owners not familiar with finance or budget management, provide education and training to enhance their knowledge and comfort with financial matters.
  • Leads proper recognition of restricted revenues, working with St Paul-based colleagues.
  • Oversees internal controls for Marketplace.
  • Manage and provide day to day direction on tasks and projects with Financial Analyst I and Financial Analyst II Marketplace.
  • Partners with APMG Controller and Finance colleagues to develop reports and metrics to give greater insight and standardized intelligence on broader business results.
  • Provides financial support and management for Marketplace-related grants, working with Marketplace Director of Development, COO, Financial Analyst II, editorial and other relevant staff, APMG Controller and others as needed. Specifically:
    • Preparation of grant budgets for proposals, renewals, required periodic reporting to funders, etc;
    • Conduct monthly budget to actual variance meetings with editorial leadership to ensure program spend-out of grants in all functional areas;
    • Partner with editorial leaders of grants to review expenditures monthly, build their knowledge and comfort with financial management of grant. Become an essential advisor to business leaders to ensure success in the execution of the grant.
  • Identifies areas of financial risk and opportunities in Marketplace's performance by assessing emerging trends; identify/develop key metrics for performance management working with Sr Project Manager.
  • Leverages financial systems to ensure maximum use of functionality.
  • Build processes to ensure financial information is timely, accurate and insightful for business leaders.
  • Other projects as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience across a range of financially-oriented roles.
  • Demonstrated expertise in budget preparation, financial reporting and variance analysis, financial analysis, serving as a relationship leader to explain relatively complex accounting and finance issues to non-financial colleagues, and summarizing results for senior leadership consumption.
  • Demonstrated comfort with financial systems, outstanding expertise in Excel.
  • Working knowledge of accounting, and experience in an accounting-related role.

  • Demonstrated ability and proficiency in Microsoft Office Products.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills. 

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Non-profit experience, including knowledge of intercompany and interfund transactions.
  • Knowledge of all stages of the grant process from the request for proposal through closeout including budget preparation for grant-funded proposals and financial report preparation for interim and final reports to foundations and other entities associated with general operating and capital campaign fund. 
  • Experience in the accounting, budgeting and reporting for grants.
  • Demonstrated process improvement and project management skills.
  • Experience with Lawson general ledger system and Tableau.
  • General knowledge of the OMB Circulars A-110, A-133, and A-21 as well as individual federal, state, local and private agency guidelines and organizational policies & procedures.
  • MBA a plus.
