Your Role:

The Senior Photojournalist is a hybrid role that is responsible for both creating photography/videography as well as being responsible for the daily presentation, project work and long-term planning of the MPR News visual report across all platforms. As the Senior Photojournalist, you will oversee the work of the visual staff and work closely with the radio editing staff and radio production staff to ensure that MPR News is advancing its newsgathering mission on multiple platforms, growing audience and embracing innovative ways to cover news, including the use of social media, photography and videography. In this role, you will stay current with technology, trends, metrics and competitors.  

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Oversee visual daily report and projects across platforms. 
  • Create photography and videography.
  • Direct MPR News visual journalists.
  • Lead by creating a culture of constructive performance coaching and regular, on-going feedback, encouraging creativity, invention and productivity, embracing diversity in staff make-up, creating and encouraging. individualized development opportunities and plans for staff.
  • Work with editors/reporters/show teams to assign shoot.
  • Oversee editing/production process.
  • Work with digital team in presenting visuals and multimedia. 
  • Direct statewide contract photographer network.
  • Create/oversee radio show's in-studio visual presentation.
  • Develop/train non-visual staff in competent visual reporting.
  • Maintain equipment and technology.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required. 
  • At least five or more years' experience in daily visual journalism that includes stills and video.
  • Experience leading a team with a demonstrated ability to foster high standards and an ability to coach, inspire and lead. 
  • Experience/accomplishment in multimedia reporting. 
  • Experience/accomplishment working with a digital-first team.
  • Experience/accomplishment in managing long-term news projects. 
  • Experience/accomplishment in growing audience. 

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Proven editorial judgment with a commitment to accuracy, fairness and balance. 
  • A commitment to ethical journalism.
  • Ability to see and develop distinct news enterprise stories. 
  • Ability to deliver visual stories of the highest standard. 
  • Mastery of multimedia features, including text, audio, video and still images. 
  • Mastery of standard visual technology, gear and production tools. 
  • Strong skills shooting, editing video. 
  • Able to work well and productively in an environment where news is constantly changing and being updated. 
  • Ability to prioritize work and make resource decisions accordingly.
  • Familiarity with and appreciation of public radio. 
  • Working knowledge of media law and its application to a news service on the Internet .
  • Ability to work across a range of skills and in a flexible manner, carrying out responsibilities in accordance with MPR's mission, values and professional standards.
  • Supervisory skills and ability to recruit, coach and develop talent.
  • Leadership and personnel skills and ability to inspire, motivate, train and grow employees. 
  • Encourage creativity and high editorial standards.
  • Collaborates well with outside organizations.
  • Become and remain a member in good standing of SAG-AFTRA by the thirtieth (30th) day of employment.

Reporting To This Position:

  • Visual reporting staff.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to manage some work outside of standard office hours as needed.
  • Physical Demands: 
    • Required to move about in an office environment and sit for extended periods of time.
    • Required to move about in the community and have a vehicle and a valid driver's license.
    • Frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes and simple grasping.
  • Working Conditions: 
    • Moderate noise level.
    • Occasional exposure to prevalent weather conditions.
