Who we are:

Brains On! is an award-winning audio show for kids and families. Each week, a different kid co-host joins Molly Bloom to find answers to fascinating questions about the world.  Our mission is to encourage kids' natural curiosity and wonder using science and history...but there's no age limit on curiosity, and episodes of Brains On can be enjoyed by anyone.

American Public Media is the largest station-based public radio organization in the U.S., combining multi-regional station operations, national content creation and distribution in one organization. With a portfolio that includes Live from Here with Chris Thile, BBC World Service, Marketplace and the leading classical music programming in the nation, APM is one of the largest producers of public radio programming in the world. One thousand stations carry American Public Media's 20-plus national programs. Its multi-regional station operations include 49 public radio stations and 42 translators in the Upper Midwest and California. APM podcasts offers a diverse array of podcasts featuring the best in food, culture, entertainment, business and investigative journalism.

 

Fellow, Science - Brains On:

The Brains On fellowship is open to graduate students and post-grads in scientific fields, or early career scientists interested in science communication and STEM. Fellows will learn about science communication, media and audience engagement, from the Brains On team, while the Brains On team will learn from the fellow's wealth of science knowledge and expertise.  This interaction will help Brains On serve our audiences by providing greater scientific depth and insights in our programming.

 

Key Learning Goals:

  • Learn science communication skills from a leading kids science podcast.
  • Learn how to make science accessible to audience of kids and adults.
  • Learn the basic audio recording and editing skills and honing their public-facing science writing.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Research topics for brains on episodes.
  • Participate in editorial meetings to provide scientific perspectives.
  • Identify scientists for interviews and conduct recorded interviews for episodes.
  • Help write and review scripts.

 

Benefits:

  • This Fellowship is a paid six-month position with a possibility for an extension.
  • Partial subsidy for onsite parking or bus transportation. Day to day transportation is your responsibility.
  • Eligible to accrue for sick and safe time off.
  • Eligible for health insurance as required under the ACA.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing or have earned a M.S., Ph.D., or post-doctorate from science or STEM field or early career scientists.
  • Experience conducting researching and writing about science and STEM topics.
  • Interest in science mass communication and/or youth science education.
  • Ability to collaborate closely with producers including ability to give and receive feedback.
  • Ability to write, meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Digital communication or engagement experience.
  • Demonstrated interest in communicating scientific concepts to non-scientists or kids.
  • Comfort with both Mac and PC based programs.

 

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Physical Demands:
    • Required to move about in an office environment and sit for extended periods of time.
    • Required to move about in the community.
    • Frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes and simple grasping.
  • Working Conditions:
    • Moderate noise level.
    • Occasional exposure to prevalent weather conditions.
