 Position Summary:

The visual journalist will play a lead role in shaping the visual strategy for KPCC. We're looking for someone who can produce compelling visuals tailored specifically for our digital and social platforms ' whether that means producing a character-driven, narrative video, crafting an animated video explainer, or putting together a graphics-heavy Instagram Story. Your work will be integral to the audience experience and vice versa. Preference will go to candidates with experience creating and growing an audience with social video.


In lieu of a cover letter and in order to meet the application requirements, please provide work samples as explained below.

Give 3 examples of platform-specific visual content (i.e.: video, photos, motion graphics/animation, infographics) that you created. Please include at least one example of a video created specifically for social and one example that you owned from pitch to publication.


For each piece of work, provide a brief explanation of:

1) The reasoning: Why did you choose this example? How does this piece of work demonstrate the best of your abilities? What makes this great?

2) The backstory: How did you get this story? What work went into making it?

3) The distribution: In what way was this platform specific? (i.e.: Did you shoot this with Instagram in mind? Did you plan this for Facebook Live? Were the photos supposed to be paired with a reporter story?)

Position Responsibility:

  • Be an advocate for KPCC's visual editorial strategy
  • Create platform-specific visual content, including video, motion graphics/animation and photos
  • Work closely with reporters, producers and editors to translate their stories into compelling visuals
  • Coach and inspire newsroom staff in the use of video, photography and graphics
  • Provide oversight of video production and still photo equipment
  • Assist with assigning and editing photo freelancers
  • Collaborate with digital product designer to ensure visual editorial content is consistent with the station's overall visual brand
  • Collaborate with social media editor to grow audience through visual storytelling
  • Help monitor metrics both off-site and on-site for KPCC's visual journalism
  • Other duties as assigned 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's in journalism/communications or equivalent experience
  • 3-5 years of experience editing and producing platform-specific visual content
  • Experience with a wide range of camera and lens systems and experience using several different kinds of cameras
  • Experience training reporters, producers and editors with diverse backgrounds and levels of technical expertise
  • Extensive experience with Adobe After Effects, Illustrator, Photoshop and Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro
  • Design knowledge including color, composition and typography
  • Portfolio of previous work that includes at least 3-5 examples of visuals made for a digital or social platform 

Required Technical Skills and Other Competencies:

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Knowledge of social platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube
  • Interest in Southern California news and culture
  • In-depth knowledge of the Adobe Creative Cloud and encoding and transcoding for the Web.
  • Familiarity with photo editing software
  • Visual asset management experience 

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Documented teaching experience
  • Data visualization and graphic design experience
  • MA in journalism/communication

  • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation

    • Required to move about in the community
    • Required to move about in an office environment and sit for extended periods of time
    • Frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes and simple grasping.
