Your Role:

As the Director of Membership Giving, you lead the development and implementation of an integrated, multi-strategy program designed to grow membership and drive member loyalty for Minnesota Public Radio and American Public Media.   You'll be responsible for securing over $20 million in giving annually and will serve as a member of the Development department's senior management team and manage a significant team. 

You will direct and oversee the day-to-day management of the Membership team. You will also work cross-functionally in a matrix organizational structure, collaborating with senior executives, divisional leaders and managing directors from other departments.  

Minnesota Public Radio/ American Public Media membership is among the largest public media membership programs in the country benefitting from the engagement of over 133,000 members over half of whom are sustaining members.

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Leads and Implements integrated, multi-strategy individual giving and membership program that manages 133,000 members and secures over $20 million in annual contributed income, primarily from gifts of $1200 or less.
  • Develops and implements annual and multi-year plans to acquire, engage, retain and upgrade members
  • Creates innovation and experimentation with approach to giving strategies
  • Leads an audience centric mindset and solicits audience feedback to fuel new member and existing member growth
  • Leads staff in securing individual gifts through direct mail, email, website, on air and tele-fundraising
  • Leads cross-functional collaboration to advance membership growth and retention strategies with Marketing, New Media, and Program departments
  • Collaboratively sets revenue goals with supervisor and MPR and APM leaders
  • Analyzes and utilizes membership and revenue data to strengthen revenue and retention strategies
  • Utilizes donor segmentation and creates strategies tailored to donor and prospect segments
  • Develops and monitors income and expense budget and completes monthly forecasting
  • Collaborates with Major Gift's staff to advance members through the donor continuum to Leadership Giving levels
  • Oversees member/donor communications plan
  • Leads team's engagement in leveraging and transitioning CRM system
  • Oversee and participate in various membership events
  • Participates in donor events, including occasional evenings and weekends, and donor tours involving national and international travel.
  • Provides regular written and oral reports on fund raising results
  • Plays an active role on the senior development team
  • Participates in other fund raising activities as appropriate 

Recruits, trains, coaches, supervises and evaluates team of membership professionals.

Provides advice and support to strengthen membership programs and a philanthropic culture throughout APMG

  • Advances APMG's philanthropic culture by demonstrating donor-centric practices and educating others within the organization about philanthropic best practices
  • Provides coaching, training and expert advice within MPR and to Southern California Public Radio and  APM affiliates when appropriate
  • Develop and deliver an APM Content Services package to support fundraising by stations that carry APM's programs including working closely with APM Content producers.
  • Represents MPR/APM in the public broadcasting community and maintains relationships with stations and system leaders
  • Other duties as assigned 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree, CFRE or ACFRE designation is preferred. 
  • Minimum 8-12 years development experience required.
  • Five or more years supervisory/management experience is required - must demonstrate an ability to foster high standards and an ability to coach, inspire and lead.
  • Demonstrated success managing and growing a large annual fund program that employs a variety of tactics including on-line solicitation, direct mail, tele-fundraising, and other direct response strategies
  • Demonstrated success utilizing social media to drive membership/donor growth strategies 
  • Demonstrated track record in meeting financial goals across both regional and national initiatives
  • Demonstrated success identifying, engaging, soliciting, stewarding and recognizing individual annual donors
  • Demonstrated success utilizing predictive and other analysis to identify prospective donors and members

 Required Skills, Abilities and Attributes 

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues in multiple divisions/departments to implement membership program increase awareness of development
  • Understanding of loyalty marketing, membership and sustainer programs; donor segmentation
  • Demonstrated comprehension and utilization of effective digital fundraising tactics
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities and goals, communicate with precision and clarity, motivate and lead staff, and enlist others to meet goals.
  • Demonstrated competence in writing, public speaking, and interpersonal communications.
  • Ability to recruit, motivate, lead, coach, inspire, manage, evaluate and retain talented staff members and develop high performing teams 
  • Working knowledge of Windows-based software.
  • Demonstrated understanding of database systems and database marketing requirements.
  • Well-organized, with exceptional attention to detail and follow through.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and constant change.
  • Experience with and commitment to mission-driven non-profit organizations; enthusiastic about the mission, programs and services of MPR|APM; able to embody and reflect the organization's values.
  • Proven high degree of integrity, ethical decision-making and sound business judgment; able to honor high degree of confidentiality.
  • Able to negotiate, compromise and facilitate success among diverse work groups.
