Position Summary:

Morning Edition is the second most popular radio show in the country. KPCC's Morning Edition host plays a pivotal role presenting our news content to a diverse and demanding group of listeners. The successful candidate will care deeply about Southern California stories and the interests and a dynamic region and work to connect Morning Edition's daily rundown of stories from around the world with those interests. The Host works closely with the news and program production staff and contributes to the sound of our work on air, shaping interviews, newscasts, promotional material and live elements for the broadcast audience. The Host will also represent SCPR online, via social media, as well as at community events in Southern California promoting the station, membership, as well as being involved in the community. This is one of KPCC's highest profile on-air positions.  The Host will contribute significantly to KPCC's overall sound and style.

This position requires the ability to work a regular shift with a start time of 4:00am Pacific.

Position Responsibility:

  • Work effectively and collaboratively with people across the content division.
  • Research, write and deliver on-air news.
  • Conduct live and taped interviews. 
  • Writes intros, promos and scripts.
  • Provide smooth transitions between scheduled programming.
  • Deliver seamless live, non-scripted material without warning.
  • Present news, traffic, and weather reports, along with station promotion, etc.
  • Develop significant online and social media presence.  Utilize various social media platforms to share content, connect with audiences, and promote SCPR.
  • Deliver timely, relevant content to NPR One and other on demand products as necessary.
  • Participates in the promotion of SCPR, including public appearances and on-air fundraising activities. 
  • Serves as a public representative of the program at community events in Southern California, and actively promote the station and membership via community engagement activity.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years of full-time daily radio news anchoring, hosting and/or reporting.
  • Major market experience.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated high quality radio hosting skills.
  • Engaging, energetic and conversational on-air presence.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Ability to edit rough news copy on tight deadlines.
  • Deep knowledge of news and good news judgment.
  • Ability to take complex, detailed information and summarize it into a condensed, easy to understand form.
  • Ability to manage, prioritize and present information on a tight deadline.
  • Ability to do live reports and host two-ways at expert level.
  • Ability to handle rapidly moving and breaking news stories.
  • Knowledge of online journalism practices.
  • Fluency in social media.
  • Ability to work well with production team and be open to coaching.
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm about ways to bring new listeners to the station.
  • Understands and complies with FCC Broadcast Regulations.
  • Knowledge of public radio system including its stations and audience composition.

 Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Digital audio production experience.
  • Additional language skills, such as Spanish, Mandarin, etc.
  • Public speaking, presentation and emcee skills.
  • On-air fundraising skills.

  • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to attend evening/weekend events, as needed.

    • Frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes and simple grasping.
