Your role:

Reporting directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer, you serve as an Officer of the APMG family of companies, a member of the Executive Leadership Team and as a Staff Officer of Minnesota Public Radio. In this role you are responsible for developing and executing the overall strategy of the Human Resources (HR) function in support of American Public Media Group's goals and objectives.

You are directly responsible for the HR staff of all the APMG companies and leads all HR activities. You will also provide the primary staff support for the Human Resources & Compensation Committee of the Board of APMG.

Day to day responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

  • Work with senior leaders to shape APMG strategy, serving as the internal expert on talent and functional trends, and championing innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Lead HR as a strategic voice and trusted business partner across all APMG corporate entities.
  • Anticipate and diagnose organizational need(s) and translate those into talent implications for the overall Organization.
  • Serve as a thought partner and trusted counsel to the CEO and colleagues, providing day-to-day and strategic advice on talent, employee relations, labor relations and other matters, as well as coaching and feedback. 
  • Participate in strategic planning and prepare and present talent-related issues and materials to the Board of Trustees.
  • Authentically model and champion APMG's values, and ensure focus and progress on APMG's diversity, equity and inclusion journey.

HR Leadership

  • Inspire and promote growth and elevate the culture and employment experience by defining and leading a multi-year strategic talent transformation effort, including:
    • Refining APMG's employment brand and cultivate the brand attributes into the Organization.
    • Defining APMG's talent strategy and design new talent management capabilities (e.g. identification, recruitment, onboarding, development, engagement, performance management, total rewards, etc.).
    • Updating the organizational design and rewards structure to reflect the dynamics of the business environment and the new world of work with a more mobile and less permanent workforce.
    • Building and executing a multi-year leadership development strategy (assessment, feedback/coaching, mentoring, training, succession planning, etc.) to ensure APMG has the right talent leadership in place to achieve its long-term goals.
    • Deepening APMG's commitment to be an intentionally diverse organization that serves a highly diverse audience.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders to develop HR strategies that support business goals, enhance employee engagement and mitigate employment risks.
  • Ensure that human resource practices appropriately leverage technology and incorporate best practices from other sectors and industries.

Team Leadership

  • Lead the HR function supporting all of APMG's employees including internal and consultants.
  • Oversee all aspects of the HR functions, including programs and efforts focused on diversity, equity and inclusion, recruiting, employee relations, talent development, training and performance management, and total rewards.
  • Evaluate the department structure and, with the team, plan for continual improvement of efficiencies and effectiveness.
  • Provide developmental opportunities, coaching and feedback to support the growth and retention of the HR team.

You will periodically take on other duties as are appropriate to this office and as the President may authorize or direct.

 

Qualifications:

In addition to demonstrating the Leadership Expectations outlined above, the ideal candidate will be a seasoned and strategic HR leader with a minimum of fifteen years of progressive leadership experience. This person will bring proficiency and experience across a full range of HR sub-functions.

The ideal candidate will offer deep expertise and passion for talent management; learning and development; succession planning; diversity, equity and inclusion; organization design and development; and change management. Previous experience developing and successfully implementing organization-wide talent strategy is necessary. Expertise in other areas of HR is valued, including generalist/employee relations, labor relations, total rewards and HRIS.

Professional experience in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors is ideal. A background in media is preferred and prior experience in a union environment is helpful.

The successful candidate will have contributed to enterprise-wide strategy and partnered cross-functionally to achieve organizational goals. This person will be business-minded and have a proven ability to balance mission with sound fiscal practices, making tough trade-offs when necessary. A roll-up-the-sleeves ethic, a hands-on style and a creative, can-do approach are necessary.

This person will have successfully led through periods of disruption and transformation. A proven ability to break down cultural and operational barriers to change and rally the Organization to understand and embrace change are critical. This person will be a veteran leader able to welcome differing perspectives and win the confidence of skeptical stakeholders.

Strengths and success as a trusted internal consultant, maintaining highest-degree of confidentiality and serving as a most-trusted advisor to senior leaders are vital. The ideal candidate will relate effectively to a broad set of audiences, building credibility across the Organization. Familiarity, confidence and comfort presenting and interacting with senior management and sophisticated Board members are key.

A proven builder of high-performing teams, the ideal candidate will have inspired trust and followership across HR team(s) and broader organization(s). This leader will have strong executive presence and be transparent, collaborative and people-centric. Highly developed verbal and written communication, strategic and operational planning and advanced facilitation skills are crucial.

The successful candidate will embody APMG's values, demonstrate a personal commitment to its mission, have enthusiasm for its programs and services and demonstrate knowledge of/interest in public media.

A bachelor's degree in HR or a related field is required. A master's degree is preferred.
