Position Summary:

Join the KPCC news team that's on the job as Los Angeles wakes up, greeting curious Southern Californians with sharp, engaging news stories focused on the day ahead. 

In this role, you will produce local news content for NPR's top-rated national news program Morning Edition a well-informed audience with a desire to learn more.  Let's see if this job is for you?

It's an exciting time to join KPCC and its ambitious, thriving multimedia effort to connect broadcast listeners and digital users with award-winning journalism produced by our public media station.  This is a Monday-Friday early morning role.

This position requires the ability to work a regular shift with a start time of 5:00am Pacific.

Position Responsibility:

  • Works with Sr. Producer of News and host and producer of Morning Edition in execution of daily coverage for our audience, includes identification of stories, subjects and guests.
  • Writes copy for newscasters and hosts, and edits air quality audio under deadline.
  • Conducts phone interviews with news subjects. Identifies actualities and produces them for air.
  • Responds to breaking news and developing stories.
  • Pitches story and interview ideas for news magazines. 
  • Arranges live interviews with guests.
  • Researches and books newsmakers, prepares research material for host and writes news items for host.
  • Heavily contributes to overall production of the show and newscasts and ensures editorial and productions standards are met.
  • Monitors and mines social media platforms for news updates. 
  • Fills in for producer of Morning Edition and when assigned, NPR'S early PM show All Things Considered.
  • Produces audio from reporters and outside news services, listening for content and quality. 
  • Works with digital team to update content on Web site. 
  • Helps train interns, assistant producers and new on call/temp producers. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Two or more years production, editorial or related experience.

 Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of local, national and international news; market knowledge preferred.
  • Excellent news judgment.
  • Ability to identify and pursue leads and newsmakers that will result in headline news.
  • Digital audio editing and field production skills.
  • Experienced researcher with excellent writing skills.
  • Proven ability to contribute to a positive, diverse, creative, high performance culture.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to evaluate content/quality/sound and act decisively with sound judgment.  
  • Knowledgeable in live broadcast.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure with a team and to meet deadlines. 
  • Critical reading and listening skills are required.

 Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience with call-in, talk show or public affairs program
  • Familiarity with Southern California, its officials and its influential thinkers
  • Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin or other languages desired.
