Your role:

Podcasts are exploding! More Americans than ever are listening to podcasts, and this is your chance to help shape the listening experience for millions of Americans. APM has been at the forefront of podcasting, and as a top 10 podcast network, this is a unique opportunity to provide the editorial and creative leadership for an amazing and growing group of programs and producers. Podcasts present a unique opportunity to expand our audiences, engage audiences in new ways, and tell stories and share insights in ways that we haven't been able to in the past. The Creative Director & Executive Producer of Podcasting sits at the apex of the podcasting content we create by working with our existing portfolio of shows and creating a new portfolio of programming. 

The Director oversees the majority of APM's national podcasts and is focused on building out the size and diversity of the public media audience through podcasts and other on demand programs. A significant amount of this role's focus will be on new program development with an expectation that APM will pilot and test 4 - 6 new podcasts a year.  The Director will spend a great deal of time developing and harnessing a network of contacts to identify new talent, including potential content partnerships. 

All of the above depends on great content.  The Director provides editorial leadership over the entire portfolio and ensures it meets standards that are focused first and foremost on our audiences. The Director ensures that we are informing, entertaining, delighting and surprising our audiences. Through that process, this role is focused on expanding our audiences beyond the traditional core public radio audience into new areas while maintaining APM's mission and focus. 

This person is one of two key leadership positions in our podcasting group. They work along aside a business leader who provides the non-content support as we grow our podcasting portfolio. 

Note: There is the possibility of this person working in LA or NYC, but the person should plan to spend at least two-thirds of their time in St. Paul their first year, and at least 50% of their time in subsequent years. 

Day to day responsibilities:

We're seeking a Creative Director and Executive Producer of Podcasting who will

  • Serve as editorial leader for all programs in assigned portfolio.
  • Develop and cultivate new and diverse audiences through innovative programming that focuses on and addresses the needs of these audiences.
  • Develop processes to explore and develop new podcasts that ensures a steady and regular flow of new podcast opportunities.
  • Develop a network of producers and talent to expand APM's podcast offerings.
  • Develop a creative vision for APM podcasts that provides a layer of unity between programs and reflects the values and vision of APM's podcasting portfolio.
  • Create editorial standards around podcasts, recognizing that our podcasts reflect both news (editorial) and non-news productions.
  • Work with digital's leadership to develop digital media extensions that serve new audiences; actively communicate to ensure alignment.
  • Hire, supervise, train, and manage direct staff through providing work direction, constructive performance coaching, mentorship, performance meetings, and on-going feedback.
  • Foster a creative and productive work environment.
  • Foster agile partnerships with external producers and institutions to accelerate APM's evolution as a content leader in new spaces.
  • Coordinate with the business leader the budgeting for programs, including personnel and non-salary expenses, annual as well as long-range forecasting, monitoring and compliance.
  • Serve as a key member of the APM leadership team; work together to set and drive long and short-term goals.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications of the ideal candidate:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience, to include podcast management and development experience.
  • Successful and increasing administrative, management and strategic planning experience.
  • Experience in planning, implementing and independently managing multiple projects.
  • Proven track record of meeting financial goals and key business objectives.
  • Experience producing content on multiple platforms including the Internet, events, and mobile devices.
  • Experience developing, launching and fostering new programs, especially in the podcast and non-radio spaces.
  • Ability to create and foster high standards, demonstrating an ability to teach, inspire and lead. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to mission-driven and audience-focused values.
  • Leadership qualities of presence, confidence, judgment and integrity.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Ability to create a vision for these media to be used for effective communications, audience development, public service and revenue growth.
  • Distinguished track record in program production including developing producers, on-air talent, and external partnerships in arts, culture, entertainment and long form journalism.
  • Strong people manager with experience supporting talent and developing leaders.
  • Proven strategic thinking, budget development, prioritization and management skills.
  • Ability to critically interpret audience research.
  • Creative problem solver; ability to work cross functionally to identify and realize deliverables required for growth.
  • A strong team orientation and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate at all levels with clients, agencies, staff, senior management peers and industry colleagues.
