Your Role:

As VP, Content Distribution & Partnerships, you will maintain and grow business to business distribution channels for American Public Media national content. Your work will focus on driving audience and revenue growth within the U.S. public radio system, and developing other national and international markets. You will lead a team tasked with developing and executing the distribution strategy for APM's national portfolio of programs. You will serve as lead negotiator for all external business to business content distribution agreements and continually seek out new opportunities for growth and will grow and maintain critical content partnerships, including the BBC World Service that provides U.S. public radio listeners with rich and diverse programming content from around the world. You will also establish new partnerships and build solid relationships with influential content producers, including public radio stations in America, for developing content for national distribution.

This is an opportunity to help APM leaders, especially content and product leaders, understand the market and identify new opportunities for growing and expanding our audiences. In that role, you will ideate new programming and opportunities for expanding our APM's public service.You will work very closely with key leaders across the organization, including underwriting and programming. As such, you serve an organizing and idea generating function. You must be comfortable working across various departments of the company and have a strong ability to lead through influence.

Experience leading entrepreneurial ventures and a track record of helping organizations discover new potentials is a must. You will be charged with identifying and growing new sources of revenue related to channel development across the APM organization.

Day to Day Responsibility

We're seeking a Vice President, Content Distribution & Partnerships who will 

  • Develop strategies for growing audience through U.S public radio stations and across other channels that lead to revenue opportunities through affiliation or underwriting.
  • Serve as chief negotiator for all American Public Media external partner content distributed and produced in the United States and internationally.
  • Develop critical partnerships with international broadcasting entities, such as the BBC World Service or European Broadcasting Union, for providing U.S. public radio listeners with rich and diverse programming content from around the world.
  • Establish new partnerships and relationships with the most influential public radio stations in America to develop content for nationwide public radio distribution.
  • Deliver multi-million-dollar revenue as result of the distribution of APM content in the United States.
  • Commission internal content for distribution to U.S. public radio stations and secure third-party content agreements that bolster APM's program portfolio.
  • Work internally to plan and execute new product launches for distribution through partnerships.
  • Manage all distribution sales, marketing and communications strategies for partners.
  • Play a key role in developing brand positioning strategies for audiences within specific distribution channels.
  • Seek out new content partnership opportunities that will create significant opportunities for growing APM audiences within the U.S.
  • Work across the organization to develop tools and resources that enable partners to engage their audiences through APM's program portfolio
  • Represent APM at industry conferences and find opportunities for elevating the organization's reputation as a leading content provider
  • Serve on the Executive Leadership Team and work collaboratively to help develop shared goals and strategies throughout the organization.
  • Hire, supervise, train and manage direct staff through coaching, mentorship, performance meetings and on-going feedback. Involve HR on performance issues as needed.
  • Foster a creative and productive work environment. Create development opportunities and individualized development plans for staff and training to enhance skills and foster growth. 


  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, marketing, business or equivalent with experience in audience and market development.
  • Eight (8) years of experience as a producer and/or director of public radio programs for public broadcasting corporation(s) with multi-million dollar revenue generation, at least five years of which included international programming of a wide range of diverse program styles and genres; oversight of teams in different public radio systems (both national and international); negotiating partnerships and business contracts with other public media entities (both national and international); and developing new content projects for broadcast and digital platforms. Experience may be concurrent.
  • Senior management experience is required - must demonstrate an ability to foster high standards and an ability to coach, inspire and lead.
  • Be an astute business partner and collaborative member of the senior-level team, with the ability to contribute to organization-wide planning and decision-making beyond the role within one's division or department. Must lead with an "ecosystem perspective" of the organization.
  • Understand key business drivers, financials, organizational structures and systems, how to align areas of responsibility to achieve goals, and how to get things done in a complex organizational setting.
  • Able to focus and organize people, activities and efforts to track and measure results against business goals, i.e. have a 'bias for action and results'.
  • Be comfortable, confident and willing to take a stand when needed, be able to take personal ownership and responsibility, and be counted on to achieve agreed upon results.
  • Be comfortable with ambiguity and change; and, when necessary, able to decide and act without the complete data or total picture.
  • Have an eye for recruiting, developing and retaining talent within one's professional field. This includes building strong external professional networks to ensure robust talent pipelines, as well as identifying and developing high-potential talent internally.
  • Be capable of leveraging people's strengths while minimizing their weaknesses.
  • Can create a culture in which people want to do their best by fostering open dialog and creating strong morale and team spirit.
  • Have proven experience in leadership development, with the ability to cultivate it effectively with management team members.
  • Have the proven ability to build strong, supportive and collaborative relationships, relate effectively with all levels and functions in an organization, be approachable, and be a good listener who can quickly find common ground to solve problems.
