Position Summary:

 

Marketplace is the most widely heard business show in the country -- on radio or TV heard by over 20 million people on radio and on demand. The Accountant / Financial Analyst will play an integral role in the smooth functioning of Marketplace's daily business and financial operations.  Reporting to the Supervisor, Financial Analysis, this role will manage the accounts payable function for the Marketplace portfolio, provide financial analysis and reporting in collaboration with the LA Finance team, and support the Treasury function for APMG. This work will be essential in maintaining the integrity of the general ledger and will help the Finance team draw out the story told by the financials.

Position Responsibility:

  • Work collaboratively with the Supervisor, Financial Analysis and the Financial Analyst II to provide financial reporting, processing, and analysis in support of the Marketplace portfolio. Develop thorough working knowledge, and comfort with forecasting process to serve as back-up to Financial Analyst II;
  • The Accountant / Financial Analyst is responsible for the implementation of the financial processing functions with direct accountability to the APMG Controller's Office regarding processes, systems, policies, internal controls, and internal /external audits. Responsibilities include:
    • Accounts Payable and Cash disbursement cycle -- processing and approval of invoices, purchase orders, capital expenditure requests, check requests, contracts and W-9's from vendors;
    • Verification of independent contractor data to ensure proper payments.
    • Request new vendors and accounts in Lawson for Marketplace;
    • Collaboration with Marketplace administration staff to facilitate the creation of requisitions for the editorial team -- ensure transactions are properly authorized, coded, and supported with required source documents (e.g. freelance contracts, receipts, W9s, etc.);
    • Identify and help implement improvements in financial processing (e.g. set up of annual purchase orders where applicable, effectively utilize technology, provide procedure / workflow recommendations, etc.);
    • Establish process measures and analyze vendor payments. Work with Editorial team to establish appropriate freelance reporter measures baseline and quarterly check ins (if appropriate);
    • Other accounting tasks as assigned by the Supervisor, Financial Analysis.
  • Work collaboratively with the Treasury Operations Manager and Sr. Accountant in St. Paul to provide treasury support. Responsibilities include:
    • Reconcile company bank accounts with supporting documentation and general ledger records; analyze, resolve, and initiate transactions for any differences;
    • Prepare journal entries and related supporting documentation bimonthly for payroll and the monthly close process;
  • Facilitate the proper use and accessibility of APMG's financial and human resources online tools (e.g. Lawson, Concur, Cognos, and Kronos/Timekeeper) for budget managers and staff members:
    • Provide training of Concur Management System and check for correct allocation of account coding and expense types for local groups and bureaus and provide second level support.
    • Work with Editorial Administration who will be providing first level support on Concur to all editorial staff;
    • Expense delegate for Editorial -- review expense reports to ensure transactions are properly coded and processed in compliance with policies and procedures;
    • Provide user assistance and monitor the consistent and intended use of Kronos / Timekeeper systems;
  • Prepare monthly journal entries for assigned accounts/areas;
  • Document / develop desk procedures for all financial processes. Update/maintain on an annual basis;
  • In partnership with the Supervisor, Financial Analysis and the Financial Analyst II, provide financial support for Marketplace-related grants, working with Marketplace COO, Editorial and other relevant staff, Controller, and others as needed;
  • Maintain highest standards of quality control in processing and reporting financial information. Quality control will be defined by degree of accuracy, completeness, thoroughness and timeliness;

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years in accounting, grants, budgeting, and or financial analysis.

 

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of the cash disbursement cycle, accounts payable, treasury functions, systems, and tools in a multiple location/entity environment;
  • Strong understanding of fundamental accounting concepts; project tracking and inter-company mechanics;
  • Strong organizational skills ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Outstanding expertise in Excel; comfort with MS Office programs;
  • Demonstrated expertise in budget preparation, financial reporting and variance analysis, financial analysis, serving as a relationship leader to explain relatively complex accounting and finance issues to non-financial colleagues;
  • Perform tasks and interact with people at all levels in the organization with confidence and speak authoritatively on matters within the position's purview;
  • Communication / leadership Ability to effectively influence the resolution of financial matters in a tactful and professional manner; facilitate harmonious cross-divisional workflows;
  • Strong problem-solving skills ability to present alternatives when standard procedures do not apply;
  • Must have the ability to extract meaning and communicate the "big picture" from high volume, micro level analysis;
  • Demonstrated record of implementing compliance with policies and procedures;
  • Proven record to anticipate, identify and appropriately communicate financial matters;
  • Maintain high standards of customer service, professional ethics and confidentiality;
  • Self-starter with ability to work both independently and on a team.

 

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting/Finance; candidates with equivalent experience will be considered;
  • Lawson and Cognos BI experience preferred;
  • Accounting and financial reporting experience with not-for-profits, grant funding, and media industry environments;
  • Experience administrating end-user web-based applications;
  • Experience with multiple divisions/locations.
