Minnesota Public Radio/ American Public Media (MPR/APM) operates a 46-station radio network serving nearly all of Minnesota and parts of surrounding states. Reaching more than 1 million listeners each week, MPR and its three regional services, MPR News, Classical MPR and The Current, produce programming for radio, digital and live audiences. MPR marked its first half century of public service in 2017 with a full year of new conversations, broadcast programming and special events on air, online and in person across the state. Programs produced by MPR's national programming division, American Public Media, reach more than 21 million listeners via 1,000 radio stations nationwide each week. APM is one of the largest producers and distributors of public radio programming in the world, with a portfolio that includes BBC World Service, Marketplace, and the leading classical music programming in the nation. APM also offers a diverse array of podcasts featuring the best in food, culture, entertainment, business and investigative journalism. 

Your Role:

This is a pivotal and exciting time in the history of MPR/APM. In the midst of a highly successful $75M campaign to fund transformation of public media, you will play an integral part of Minnesota Public Radio's major gifts team. You'll meet with donors and prospects to solicit and steward campaign gifts and prominent operating gifts of the Leadership and President's Circles, and special restricted gifts to support content areas.  We are a collaborative major gifts team and work across the Development Division and MPR/APM departments to meet revenue goals.  More than 50% of your time will be spent visiting with and cultivating prospects in-person.

Day to Day Responsibilities 

We're seeking a Major Gifts Officer who will

  • Qualify and strategically cultivate, solicit and steward donors and prospects.
  • Manage a dedicated portfolio of 125-150 donors and prospects within moves management.
  • Develop written proposals, renewal letters, and other donor communications.
  • Coordinate the involvement of natural partners within the organization.
  • Participate in major donor events locally and throughout Minnesota.
  • Document donor contacts in donor management software following established protocols.
  • Conducts a minimum of 120 face-to-face visits each year.
  • Raise five and six figure gifts.
  • Provide regular reports on prospect management and fundraising results.
  • Manage special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate has:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years of applicable experience. Experience should include increasing fundraising experience in prospect management.  
  • Previous experience working directly with donors and volunteers.
  • Strong understanding of the major gift process of Identification, Qualification, Cultivation, Solicitation and Stewardship.
  • Passion for public media.
  • Skill and experience in building and maintaining relationships, including an aptitude for engaging and motivating donors and prospects, while achieving bottom-line results.
  • A strategic thinker and good listener who has demonstrated resourcefulness in working collaboratively with many constituencies.
  • Motivated, creative, and organized self-starter and team player.
  • Proven track record of successfully meeting revenue targets both through upgrading existing accounts, and new prospecting.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, and the ability to communicate the mission of MPR in a compelling fashion, and successful interaction with all areas of the organization.
  • Able to multi task and handle multiple projects and demonstrated time management skills.
  • Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and other pc-based software)
  • Professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Ability to work independently and as a flexible and collaborative member of the major gifts team.
  • Must be able to exercise professional discretion and good judgment.
  • Must maintain a high degree of confidentiality in an information-rich environment.

  • Experience in soliciting gifts within the range of $5,000 - $100,000.
  • Knowledge of Twin Cities and greater Minnesota philanthropic communities.
