Position Summary:

 

Marketplace Tech is looking for an experienced producer for a temporary, full-time assignment from July 2018 - January 2019. As Producer, you'd be responsible for everything from booking high profile tech company CEOs, authors and lawmakers to identifying key innovations, debates and conversations about the technologies that most impact our lives. 

 

From interviewing senators about the Equifax hack, to exploring how algorithms might worsen discrimination, or examining the history of digital advertising and data collection, our show tells the story of modern life through the business of technology.

 

The Producer of Marketplace Tech is a key part of a small team that delivers a daily broadcast module and podcast, and occasionally works on Marketplace collaborations, bigger editorial projects and special coverage. Marketplace Tech explores the big ideas, trends, and implications of technology in our daily lives.  The Marketplace Tech team also serves up information and coverage ideas across all Marketplace shows and platforms, when there's breaking news related to the tech sector. Our ideal candidate is energetic, passionate about technology and innovation, highly collaborative, organized, loves the art of crafting audio stories, and the power of informed, dynamic conversation.

 
The location for this position is flexible. Los Angeles, CA or New York, NY are preferred.

This position will be an Associate Producer II OR Producer I OR Producer II depending upon the most qualified candidate's experience and their ability to fulfill the "Position Responsibility" of that level.

Position Responsibility:

  • Coordinate the production process for one daily broadcast module, and one podcast version. Manage timely delivery for all elements of the program.
  • Generate ideas for, book, coordinate and prepare background materials and questions for guests being interviewed on the show.
  • Organize and produce guest interviews on a tight deadline.
  • Ensure content shelf stays timely and useful.
  • Coordinate interview recordings with audio engineers, remote studios, guests and host. Direct and oversee audio production by engineers for final product.
  • Edit program content by required deadlines, to specific broadcast lengths.
  • Determine content that may warrant longer lengths for podcast or additional digital assets, based on strength of guest, topic or story.
  • Collaborate with the host and senior producer on the creative process that generates themes and story ideas for the show.  Participate in all creative aspects of the program.
  • Collaborate with show team to highlight Marketplace Tech across broadcasts and digital platforms.
  • Provide content for Marketplace.org and other written digital content related to daily audio segments. Coordinate with Marketplace Digital team.
  • Assist in field production, gathering sound or interviews when needed and available.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

In addition to the above, Producer I responsibilities include:

    • Can manage the production process and line produce.
    • Can be the "final ear" on pieces.
    • Can determine show rundowns.
    • Supervises editing and post production.
    • Generate coverage, staying ahead of the news curve to develop leads.
    • Responsible for editorial content of a project/element.
    • Edit content within required deadlines.
    • Is cross trained to direct multiple shows, as needed.

 

In addition to the above, Producer II responsibilities include:

    • Can serve as lead producer for major projects - from conception to completion.
    • Create new program features.
    • Manage relationships with outside content partners to ensure maximum efficiency in sharing stories and presenting them in a dynamic way.
    • Lead field producer.
    • Lead special projects producer.
    • May assist in managing budgets- or manage part of a larger budget.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 4+ years of journalism, radio production or reporting experience. 
  • Experience in radio news production. 
  • Experience in news gathering and writing. 
  • Experience in editing digital audio.

 

Producer I: 5+ years of journalism, radio production or reporting experience.

 

Producer II: 6+ years of journalism, radio production or reporting experience.

 

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to conceive, plan and execute a radio program, podcast, and digital elements
  • Resourcefulness and ability to problem-solve.
  • Ability to work with initiative and good judgment.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Possess solid story-telling credentials, including a broad understanding of tech subjects and an awareness of general news. 
  • Ability to write smart, compelling content for a variety of platforms quickly.
  • Ability to manage myriad daily details of production. 
  • Ability to be flexible under daily deadline pressure, able to work effectively and collaboratively with hosts and other staff. 
  • High journalistic standards
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to evaluate content/quality/sound and act decisively.
  • Ability to maintain expertise in a wide variety of topics related to the technology industry and digital culture, to include key technology issues.
  • Extensive knowledge of digital audio broadcast software and techniques, studio and field production.
  • Ability to produce programs of national quality.

 

Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with ISDN, telephone and Skype interfaces.
