Position Summary: 

The Audience Engagement and Distribution Specialist manages all forms of content to extend the reach of MPR News. Using audience data, this person will identify distribution strategies across social media platforms and other content delivery methods like newsletters and voice on-demand channels. 

This role works closely with editorial, marketing, visual and audio teams to consistently identify the right content for social, shape our voice online and help develop and execute big picture social distribution strategies.  

This role works closely with digital producers, editors and reporters and is responsible for contributing to audience growth, connections, and engagement goals. 

This is an hourly role with a range of $24.13 - $28.85 (annual salary $50,200 - $60,000)

Position Responsibility: 

  • Optimize content toward various distribution channels, with an eye toward reaching and expanding engagement and driving referral traffic;
  • Develop and refine the voice of MPR News social accounts;
  • Monitor, analyze and distribute social metrics to wider teams as needed to inform future content creation;
  • Create and manage e-newsletter content and campaigns;
  • Track story performance in real-time and react accordingly;
  • Communicate with a wide network of radio and digital editors and producers to frame and optimize text and video content;
  • Identify new and existing opportunities for content distribution;
  • Collaborate with other departments on search and paid opportunities and other integrations that might include special reports/series;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience: 

  • 3-5 years of experience in a digital newsroom;
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or marketing; or equivalent experience;
  • Experience in online marketing and new marketing technologies preferred;
  • Knowledge of email-marking strategies and campaigns; 

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Must be a strategic thinker and have good news judgment, excellent writing and editing skills and ability to write on deadline;
  • Ability to communicate key messages both internally and externally;
  • Knowledge of AP style;
  • Must excel at headline writing and be an excellent short-form writer, who is driven by data and analytics to understand digital success;
  • Ability to leverage promising content into successful campaigns across platforms;
  • Ability to interpret metrics from Google Analytics, Chartbeat and BuzzSumo;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and bring new ideas to the table verbally and in written work;
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at one time, and project manage task from start to finish;
  • Solid interpersonal skills with the demonstrated ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with creative, energetic and demanding professionals;
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work;
  • Must possess excellent customer services skills and a friendly and professional attitude;
  • Consistent and reliable attendance is required;
  • May be occasional evenings and/or weekend work. 

Preferred Skills and Experience: 

  • Experience working in a non-profit organization is helpful;
  • Knowledge of public radio is a plus;
  • Experience in digital marketing a plus;
  • Be creative and innovative in creating tone of voice.

Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Physical Demands: 
    • Required to occasionally move about in an office environment and sit for extended periods of time;
    • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and printer;
    • Frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes and simple grasping.  
  • Working Conditions: 
    • Moderate noise level;
    • May need to be called in to work as news warrants.
