Position Summary:

 

KPCC, the largest public radio station in Southern California, is seeking a temporary, full-time reporter with significant journalism experience and a polished on-air style to produce in-depth, enterprise stories exploring religion, international affairs and the Southern California diaspora.

 

The person filling this post would be skillful in breaking down complex issues for our listeners and writing in a style that is engaging for our online audience. He or she would build sources and credibility in diverse communities in Los Angeles a metropolitan area where a third of the people are foreign-born.

 

Stories about how Korean immigrant churches are changing as younger generations grow more secular, and the #MeToo movement's impact in churches, mosques and temples are part of the territory covered on this religion beat. The U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and reaction to it among L.A.'s Christian Armenians could also be among the issues explored by the successful candidate.

 

This position runs for six months only beginning in August and is grant-funded.

 

This will be either a senior reporter OR correspondent-level position depending upon the most qualified candidate's experience.  The correspondent is a higher-level position that varies from the senior reporter to include the following attributes in addition to those outlined under "Position Responsibility":

 

  • Develop and deepen beat; establish priorities, goals, and coverage plans for the beat.
  • Routinely break stories on the beat.
  • Develop and lead special projects.
  • Deliver stories with highly-developed on-air style and originality in writing.
  • Serve as mentor/coach to others in the newsroom.

Position Responsibility:

  • Establish priorities and goals for the beat.
  • Pitch, report and produce regular news stories and feature stories.
  • Assemble, edit and mix stories for air.
  • Deliver substantive reports on the assigned subject on a tight deadline.
  • Delivers stories with highly developed on-air style and originality in writing.
  • Provide high quality "live" reports with newscasts and talk show and host 2-ways as required.
  • Produce for website, social and mobile channels with writing and photography (supplying additional audio, visual material related Web resources).
  • Work with news editors to generate ideas.
  • Develop and cultivate sources: Utilize PIN, digital and in-person interaction to build broad source base and audience relationships.
  • Assist other reporters, producers and editors with information.
  • Lead and develop special projects aligned with KPCC newsroom mission.
  • Assist in special programming, including Crawford Family Forum events.
  • Operate production and studio equipment.
  • Work with editors, reporters and operations staff to coordinate content.
  • Develop ideas/proposals for reports and programs for own reporting and for reports by other reporters.
  • Perform public outreach; speak on behalf of SCPR, and fully integrate PIN as a tool.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience. 
  • Senior Reporter Level:  5+ years or more professional journalism experience.
  • Correspondent Level:  10+ years or more professional journalism experience.
  • Experience and enthusiasm for using internet channels (including mobile and social) for newsgathering and interaction with sources, collaborators and audience members.

  • Demonstrated radio reporting, digital news and production skills. 
  • Strong writing and reporting skills. 
  • Skilled at developing own stories and at judging which stories to pursue and how effectively to complete assignments.
  • Facility and knowledge of web and mobile tools and culture.
  • Ability to deliver stories of the highest standard as measured by clarity, balance, creativity, originality, cogent analysis, thoroughness, effective production, eloquence and compelling delivery.
  • Facility with source and beat development; subject-matter expertise a plus.
  • Ability to function as a leader in news judgment, influences agenda setting.
  • Commitment to enact best journalism practices.
  • Ability to use sound, when available, to create scenes that engage the listener and convey the emotion of the story.
  • Ability to consistently produce timely and substantive reports on a tight deadline.
  • Ability to develop and execute big projects.
  • Excellent in live reports and host two-ways at expert level.
  • Fully competent in use of recording and production equipment.
  • Ability to work simultaneously on short and long-term projects.
  • Ability to develop stories with multiple interviews, scene changes, and strong knowledge of subject matter.
  • Ability to mentor and guide the work of others.
  • Ability to represent SCPR News in official functions. 
  • Recognized internally and externally as expert in area of coverage.
  • Extraordinary ability to synthesize information.
  • Ability to lead the organization and innovation in reporting.
  • Specialized skills and very wide experience and accomplishment.
  • Able to manage complex internal and external relationships.

 

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Fluency in other languages desirable.
  • Experience reporting on religion and/or international affairs preferred.
  • Experience in or familiarity with public radio news.
