Position Summary:


Are you an ambitious data journalist ready for your next challenge? KPCC is seeking a hands-on data editor to join our newsroom, working closely with the investigative team and other editors and reporters.


We're looking for someone with a track record of creativity and the ability to translate ideas whether yours or others into top-notch projects. You should have a passion for analyzing data, reporting it out and bringing it all to life online.


Our newsroom, one of the biggest in Southern California, is committed to holding elected leaders and institutions accountable and telling stories that make a difference in people's lives. And we're at an exciting time across a number of mediums: on-air, on demand, on the web and with in-person events.


You'll be expected to take a leadership role as we work to illustrate the news, create a sense of discovery for readers and listeners and connect more directly to our audience. Your role will be integral to our news gathering operation -- not siloed or adjacent.


And yes, you may be called upon to edit broadcast scripts and digital content to carry out the mission of telling data-based stories across platforms.


Position Responsibility:

  • Engages with reporters, editors and/or producers to develop data-driven digital daily and enterprise content, individually and as a team.
  • Identifies and tests tools, techniques and practices for data and information visualizationIdentifies, collects and formats data sources for visualization.
  • Writes code using the same coding standards and best practices as the Product team. Works with the Product team to deploy applications.
  • Ensures that all materials produced for the site meet program standards and practices, including standards of accuracy, fairness, objectivity and balance.
  • Provides ongoing insight and counsel to other shows and departments about their online and digital projects and ambitions. Maintains and shares awareness of industry trends and new technologies and explores those that would benefit the newsroom and the audience.
  • Represents newsroom internally and externally.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in a design, informatics, journalism or related field.
  • 4-8 years' journalism experience in traditional media including hands-on experience in data analysis and/or building data-driven news applications/interactives.
  • Experience with a wide set of tools and the comfort to get dirty when data doesn't come in a pristine condition.


Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of web development languages and technology such as NodeJS, Javascript, or Ruby on Rails.
  • Experience with frameworks such as Django or Ruby on Rails a plus.
  • Ability to perform data analysis in Python or R.
  • First-rate writer and communicator with the ability to quickly identify news stories of interest.
  • Knowledge of AP Style.
  • Good research, organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure with discretion and mature judgment.
  • Knowledge of data visualization tools. 
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new tools.


Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Interest in Southern California news and politics, and understanding of the region's diverse communities and geography.
  • Some experience providing work direction or supervisory experience.
  • Some experience assigning stories and editing copy.

  • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

    • Frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes and simple grasping.
