Position Summary:

This position represents an extraordinary opportunity to impact the way the entire organization thinks about developing talent. The Director will lead and oversee Marketplace's Human Resource (HR) functions including talent acquisition, employee training and development, employee retention, leadership development and succession planning, and performance management.  The Director will partner with the APMG Human Resources leadership and team on compensation, compliance and other policy driven responsibilities.

 

This position will also manage Marketplace's administrative support staff.

 

Position Responsibility:

  • Serve as a trusted adviser and business partner to Marketplace's SVP, General Manager and executive team.  Act as a coach and strategic advisor on all human capital matters that drive strategic and cultural objectives for the business.
  • Operate as a senior HR business leader with insights and contributions to the company's overall human resources strategy, priorities and future direction.
  • Set a clear, compelling vision for how to attract, develop, and retain exceptional talent.
  • Initiate honest/critical conversations about culture change. Steward the company culture by recognizing, articulating, and shaping the need for change with a data-driven approach. Help ensure our culture thrives during periods of aggressive growth. Provide facilitation for a variety of conversations around engagement, culture and work place inclusion.
  • Develop and implement strategies to nurture an inclusive, healthy work culture that values different viewpoints and provides opportunities for all employees to grow professionally.
  • Develop and oversee programs/initiatives to drive employee engagement. Develop robust career pathways and professional development opportunities for employees becoming an employer of choice.
  • Support the Thrive performance communication annual review process and assist in the continual evaluation and improvement of the process, including day-to-day constructive feedback for employees.
  • Build a training and professional development program across the organization. Assist leaders in creating strong individual development plans for their employees and strong succession plans for their teams. Support and develop managers to serve as key levers in employee engagement and retention.
  • Facilitate a productive, respectful, values-driven work environment that optimizes employee relations. Manage all employee relations issues in consultation as needed with SVP, HR and Legal.
  • Work cross-organizationally with the APMG HR Shared Services team to ensure policy interpretation, philosophy, and practices are consistent with the rest of the organization. Manage roll-out of organization-wide HR initiatives.
  • Primary liaison with APMG HR Shared Services. Work with local HR teams to ensure that HR process and policies reflect Marketplaces organizational talent and culture strategies.
  • Foster a creative, inclusive and productive work environment for direct staff by creating development opportunities and individualized development plans and training to enhance skills and foster growth, and providing on-going and constructive performance feedback, coaching, and mentorship.
  • Provide leadership to Marketplace's administrative team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in human resources or a related field or equivalent work experience.
  • 10 years' progressively responsible, HR business related experience.
  • 5+ years' experience in a management, training and development or other HR related position.
  • Experience as a change agent, partnering with leadership to implement and drive change at a strategic level in a rapid growth organization.
  • Strong generalist background and hands-on experience with: employee relations issues at all levels, staffing/O.D. support, strategic leadership and coaching, change management, compensation, benefits, HRIS, organization design, and recruiting talent.
  • Experience designing, conducting, analyzing and reporting on training, organization development and employee engagement programs and initiatives.
  • Experience in facilitation.
  • Fully proficient with Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook. Somewhat proficient or willing to quickly learn the basics of: Current HRIS, ApplicantPro (ATS), social media, wiki editing and other systems and online tools as necessary.

  • Strong, effective and experienced facilitator.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise teams, where the team may have conflicting priorities and/or goals.
  • Deep knowledge of California and New York employment laws and regulations with the ability to identify situations where applicable laws must be enforced for compliance.
  • Experience in leadership development and effective introduction to management team members. 
  • Proven track record of consistent follow through on commitments, is direct, truthful, and trusting of others. 
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects to meet deadlines, while ensuring attention to detail.
  • Professional, adaptable and emotionally intelligent, with the ability to establish a high degree of trust with management and employees at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong, supportive and collaborative relationships, relate effectively with all levels and functions across the organization, be approachable with good listening skills, adept at quickly finding common ground to solve problems.
  • Strong written, oral and online communication skills. Demonstrated use of such for professional development, research, networking and staying apprised of industry trends, issues relevant to HR and the business, and changes to CA employment law.
  • Tact and diplomacy are essential. Able to handle confidential and sensitive employee information and situations with discretion and professionalism.
  • Comfort working with a highly collaborative, fast-paced team. Must be able to rapidly respond to shifting priorities, pitching in when and where needed. 
  • Confident and willing to take a stand when needed. Able to take personal ownership and responsibility for achieving agreed upon results.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and change, able to act decisively with limited information.
  • Supervisory skills and ability to recruit, coach and develop talent, inspire and lead others.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Marketplace and APM businesses. Ability to discern the distinct operational and cultural differences, while maintaining a broader APM organizational perspective.
  • Creative thinker with ability to and comfort with moving outside "normal".
  • Ability to establish and sustain a variety of vendor, community and industry relationships.
  • Leadership qualities of presence, confidence, judgment, and integrity are required to command the respect and response of colleagues, and senior executive personnel.

 

Preferred Skills and Experience: 

  • Knowledge of adult learning theories and skill in developing effective curriculum.
  • Ability to assess needs as well as measuring effectiveness of current training programs.
  • Experience working across multiple states and work locations with varying cultures and needs.
  • General knowledge and understanding of, or experience in Labor Relations.
