Position Summary:


Marketplace is the most widely heard business show in the country -- on radio or TV heard by over 20 million people on radio and on demand. We're an innovative staff in the middle of an exciting transition from a traditional radio shop to an ambitious multi-platform organization. This is a place of creativity and unorthodox thinking.  We don't take ourselves too seriously, even though we understand the critical importance of people understanding how the economy shapes the world around us.  


We're looking for a nimble reporter to create daily digital and occasional radio stories for our flagship show with Kai Ryssdal. You would pluck an idea from our morning editorial meeting, determine the best form for the story and execute, in collaboration with the digital and PM radio teams.


We're looking for a news junkie who is imaginative and creative, has voracious curiosity, is comfortable with experimentation, and thrives on the deadline pressure of daily journalism. A successful candidate will think beyond reporting the day's news to explaining why things are happening and what's likely to come next.


You should understand how to tell stories across platforms; have strong opinions on where a story should live to reach the greatest number of people; know how to cut audio; be an active participant in social media; and be able to work with hosts, producers, and the digital team to create sharp, distinctive Marketplace stories. 


This is a new "bridging role" at Marketplace and will report to the Executive Director of Digital, but be embedded and working closely with the PM team.


This position will work from 6 am-2:30 pm PST.

Position Responsibility:

  • Report, write and develop digital stories ranging from quick turn-around social and/or written pieces to deeper features or data-driven interactives.
  • Work collaboratively across the shop with everyone from other reporters to radio/podcast/video producers to digital designers and developers.
  • Consistently engage listeners and digital consumers.
  • Help foster a creative and productive work environment.
  • Fill in for other positions at Marketplace, as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Three or more years of newsroom reporting.


Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Excellent news judgment and idea generation. Ability to take a news story and develop a sharp, distinct angle.
  • Ability to quickly write in the Marketplace voice.
  • Commitment to fairness and accuracy
  • Experience in editing digital audio.
  • Experience writing and producing for digital, including social media.
  • Familiarity with content management systems.
  • Resourcefulness and ability to problem-solve.
  • Independence, initiative and excellent judgment.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Strong critical judgment skills and the ability to make decisions regarding credibility, personality and value of material to program.
  • Ability to successfully meet deadlines and handle multiple responsibilities under pressure on a consistent basis.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Superior communication, organizational and collaborative skills.
  • Interested in emerging technology


Preferred Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Previous employment working in a national news organization.
  • Experience working with talent.
  • Field production experience.
  • Reporting experience.
