Position Summary: 

The reporter will be responsible for aggressive, competitive and ground-breaking coverage of mental health topics, from mental wellness to mental illness. Coverage will also include state and national policies and systems that shape medical and social services in Minnesota.  Stories within this reporter's beat will aim to amplify the voices of people living and struggling with mental illness; mental health in the workplace and schools; and medical developments in the treatment of mental health. The mental health reporter will be responsible for driving breaking coverage and in-depth journalism on health issues facing this state on multiple platforms.

This role is new to MPR News and is a part of a mental health initiative launching this year. This journalist will interact with the Managing Director of MPR's Mental Health Initiative and inform the Mental Health Initiative. This job will be based in the MPR Newsroom, get story edits/assignments from a Senior Editor, and strictly adhere to MPR News ethics guidelines including advocacy and independence.

Coverage includes:                

  • Daily and longer-term reporting on all platforms
  • Ground breaking journalism on issues of access to services and parity
  • Prevention and risk factors
  • Mental health across age groups, gender, ethnicity, race, location (rural, urban, suburban)
  • Accountability journalism on the systems charged with providing coverage and care and managing infrastructure; policy 
  • Ground breaking reporting on advances in treatment and outcomes for people with mental illness that follows MPR News guidance on reporting on studies and trials 

Position Responsibility: 

  • Report groundbreaking daily and enterprise stories.
  • Deliver aggressive, competitive and groundbreaking coverage of the beat.
  • Identify themes, trends, key players and develop specialized knowledge of beat.
  • Provide "live" reports when needed.
  • Work closely with editors and show producers on complimentary program and digital content.
  • Lead or assist in special reporting projects.
  • Cultivate broad base of sources.
  • Regularly employ federal and state freedom of information laws to gather documents and other data
  • General Assignment reporting as assigned 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent. 
  • At least three years of reporting experience
  • Demonstrated skill at reporting on science and research
  • Experience in writing for web and radio and production skills

  • Comfortable working with and reporting on communities across racial, social, socioeconomic, political, regional, ethnic and other lines.
  • Capacity to report complex stories quickly and thoroughly.
  • Ability to deliver stories authoritatively and competently. 

Preferred Skills and Experience: 

  • Relevant experience using social media channels as a platform for presentation and a reporting resource.
  • Competent visually with photography, video and/or graphics.
  • Fluent in AP Style.
  • Familiar with linear editing tools for audio or video.
  • Familiar with the basics of web production and content management systems.
  • Conversational in a language other than English.
  • Comfortable navigating open records laws and procedures.
