American Public Media (APM) is one of the largest producers and distributors of public radio programming in the world, with a portfolio that includes BBC World Service, Marketplace, and the leading classical music programming in the nation. APM also offers a diverse array of podcasts featuring the best in food, culture, entertainment, business and investigative journalism.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Producer works to shape APM On Demand's editorial voice and production process. This includes collecting and organizing hundreds of listener stories, brainstorming ideas for episodes, booking guests for interviews, researching topics, writing scripts and editing audio. The role will initially focus on the APM show Terrible, Thanks for Asking.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organize listener submissions and communicate with listeners as needed.
  • Contribute ideas and research for future episodes.
  • Log audio.
  • Edit audio.
  • Write scripts.
  • Assist on production in the field/on location.
  • Support membership, merchandise and live event activities.
  • Support special programming as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Internship or 6 months to one year experience in audio storytelling.  
  • Experience with digital audio editing systems.
  • Experience writing for web based platforms.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms.

 PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Interest in podcasts and audio storytelling.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to generate fresh, strong ideas for the show.
  • Solid emotional judgment.
  • Strong organizational skills; comfort with details and deadlines.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Interpersonal skills, including ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a variety of individuals and groups such as audience, guests, hosts and other APM staff.
  • Experience with digital editing systems, ProTools preferred.
  • Ability to remain calm and consistent when communicating with emotionally vulnerable constituents.
  • Ability to learn new industry-specific skills.

  • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Physical Demands:
    • Required to move about in an office environment and sit for extended periods of time
    • Frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes and simple grasping.
