Position Summary:

This position will have primary responsibility for analyzing, planning, developing, and implementing compensation programs for APM and its affiliated companies.  This role will work toward the goals of being responsive to the organization's total rewards strategy, and staying competitive with external market practices.  This position will also serve as the primary owner of several HR processes: performance communication, annual reviews, annual merit process, and job evaluations. This position will also provide support on a number of HR processes and projects.

Position Responsibility: 

  • Manage the APM job description system, ensuring job descriptions are reviewed for internal equity, standard language, position requirements, FLSA and EEO classification, etc.  Compare position description language against job grids, if applicable.
  • Manage the job reclassification process, evaluating each request from managers to determine if changes are significant enough to warrant a reclassification. 
  • Provide generalist support to management and staff on various HR processes and practices: employee relations, job postings, training & development, payroll and benefit questions, onboarding, organizational development, HR systems, and policies/procedures.
  • Serve as the primary owner of THRIVE performance review process.  This includes:  managing quarterly check-ins, employee and manager communication, training (including new hire orientation/manager bootcamp), managing forms in the HR system, and supporting managers through the process.
  • Serve as the primary owner of the annual merit review process.  This includes:  developing a project plan, managing merit forms in the HR system, researching market competitive merit budgets, communication, employee and manager training, analyzing data, presenting results to executive leadership, and supporting managers through the process.
  • Provide guidance to managers on job descriptions, pay decisions, new hire pay, counteroffers, retention, policy and guideline interpretation, including the design of creative solutions to specific compensation-related issues.  
  • Coach managers to ensure the total rewards strategy is implemented effectively, meets established budgets, maintains internal equity, supports business objectives, and complies with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Design and implement compensation programs to meet objectives with regard to internal equity and external market competitiveness. These programs include: job evaluation, job grids, market pricing, salary administration, incentive plans, expatriate compensation, and executive compensation.
  • Prepare and participate in external market surveys, approximately 10-15 annually.
  • Ensure organizational compliance with all Federal and State employment laws, including Fair Employment Practices, Fair Labor Standards Act, Equal Employment Opportunity, and Wage and Hour laws.
  • Research market data and trends to determine annual salary structure movement, geographic cost of labor differentials, and overall compensation trends.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of existing compensation plans, policies, practices, guidelines and procedures.
  • Participate in various HR projects, including: inclusion & diversity, employee engagement, process improvements, benefits open enrollment, learning & development, succession planning, standard operating procedures, and best practices.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor's degree in HR Management, Business, or related field; OR equivalent work experience.
  • 6+ years of experience in Human Resources; specifically 4 or more years experience in compensation (including executive comp) and generalist functions.
  • Experience designing, conducting, analyzing and reporting on compensation and salary administration.
  • Experience with HRIS systems or similar databases. 
  • Significant experience using Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and other pc based software.

  • General knowledge of HR functions (employee relations, training, staffing, performance management, organizational development, and benefits).

  • A passion for creating systems and order out of chaos, and the ability to work well with both linear and non-linear thinkers.
  • High degree of discretion and confidentiality, a professional attitude and demeanor, and the ability to exercise sound judgment with a high degree of sensitivity.
  • Independence, initiative and ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Flexibility and comfort level with changing priorities.
  • Ability to deliver results on-time, on-budget, and in-scope.
  • Ability to understand various job families and job functions within the organization and use the information while comparing with market data.
  • Tech-savvy strong computer skills including Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point and experience with HRIS systems. Self-sufficiency and a willingness to embrace new software, programs, and systems as needed.
  • Sense of humor, engagement, and discretion.
  • Knowledge of all applicable laws as they pertain to compensation plans.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities.
  • Naysayers, information hoarders, self-promoters, the highly volatile, or anyone who's ever used: "that's the way we've always done it" as an excuse to avoid change need not apply.

  • CCP certification.
  • Experience with California specific laws and regulations.
  • Work experience in an HR Generalist role.
  • Work experience with unions.
  • Experience working with employees in multiple locations.
  • PHR or SPHR certification.
  • Knowledge of and interest in public radio.
  • Experience with both non-profit and for-profit companies.
