Position Summary

APM Reports, the national investigative and documentary group at American Public Media, is teaming with the public radio consortium Great Lakes Today for a reporting project that will enlighten millions of people living in cities across the Midwest and have a significant national impact. We're looking for a high-end, print-oriented investigative journalist to join a radio reporter from Great Lakes Today in a reporting endeavor that will go through most of 2018. Ideally you live in Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee or Cleveland, though you'll be constantly moving around the Great Lakes region. (It's grant-funded, meaning the position ends when the project is complete.) To compete for this job, you'll need a portfolio of investigative reporting across a range of topics that shows exceptional resourcefulness, resilience and results. And though you're deft with data and spreadsheets, you'd much rather be on the street talking to people. You're also collaborative by nature and patient digging in for the long term. The project?  Position Responsibilities

  • Partner with Great Lakes Today journalist to co-own the story pursuit.
  • Relentlessly hunt and analyze public documents.
  • Develop a variety of sources, from experts to ordinary people. 
  • Work closely with visual journalists.
  • Lead the written version of the investigation.
  • Contribute to various digital features.
  • Conduct broadcast-quality interviews.
  • Work with social media team as needed.
  • Assist audio producers.
  • Participate in public outreach as needed.
  • Participate in events as needed. 

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • At least three years' experience in investigative reporting.
  • Experience using investigative methods, including use of public records, verification of investigative findings, source vetting and data analysis.
  • Experience on an investigative reporting team.
  • Experience writing investigative stories for print and/or web.
  • Record of breaking stories that have impacted public policy.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Sophisticated reporting and interviewing skills. 
  • Clear, fluid writing.
  • Knowledge of common investigative tools including spreadsheets, databases, advanced Internet research, source development and use of public documents.
  • Software skills:Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Google Fusion, Document Cloud.
  • Ability to take complex information and present it in easy-to-understand stories.
  • Deep commitment to journalism ethics.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Independence, initiative and good judgment.
  • Ability to work effectively with moderate supervision.
  • Ability to work with editors, reporters and producers.
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure.
  • Creativity in using web, audio and social media platforms to report stories and engage audiences.
  • Competence in use of recording and production equipment.
  • Ability to develop and execute large projects.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Strong knowledge of state, local and federal public records law and research methods.
  • Skill and experience in documentary field and studio production.
  • Fluency in Spanish or other non-English languages.
  • Experience in or familiarity with public radio news.
  • Experience with audio production and editing equipment.
  • Experience of being recorded in studio for possible use.
