Position Summary:

 

KPCC's signature news magazine, Take Two with A Martinez, is seeking a dynamic journalist who wants to engage with Southern California audiences by delivering news and information that helps them connect more deeply to their community. The successful candidate is a fountain of sharp story ideas and is a whiz with broadcast and digital copy.

 

The associate editor will contribute to the overall sound and focus of the show by shaping Take Two scripts to communicate the essential information people need to know each day in a clear yet conversational and informal way. Take Two is a news show, but we aim to reflect a certain amount of warmth with our on-air presentation and we like to have fun and advocate the use of wry humor where appropriate. This also applies to the editing of related web segments and the occasional promotional copy.

Position Responsibility:

  • Work closely with the senior producer on ways to hone the show's mission to produce content about Southern California, for Southern California and deliver on that mission.
  • Generate story ideas that are rooted in Southern California or otherwise affect the people that live here.
  • Think about ways to engage the KPCC audience and potentially new listeners with our stories/ production and occasionally working with them to bring stories to air.
  • Edit daily show scripts, including features, two-ways, cut and copies for the host to read on air; re-working copy as necessary.
  • Craft clever show opens and in-show promotional material.
  • Assist Take Two producers in making their copy cleaner, sharper and smarter; advising them on ways to make it better.
  • Help maintain a distinctive, consistent style and voice across the show and on web.
  • Consider the host's voice and style with each script being edited the tone must be conversational and spoken like the host.
  • Collaborate with senior producer on future planning, identifying in advance the important stories, events we need to be covering.
  • Copy edit producers' web segments, making sure narrative follows and is free of errors.
  • Work with outside freelancers to develop ideas for Take Two.
  • Edit feature work from outside contributors.
  • Occasionally, write/ edit Take Two promotional copy.
  • Occasionally develop and write show segments from scratch.
  • Upload outside feature to the show's play-to-air system, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field; OR equivalent work experience.
  • Five years + of experience in journalism and content production.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and edit news copy using Associated Press editing guidelines. 
  • Experience in editing software including Audition, Pro Tools.
  • Experience in Web/digital/mobile production.
  • Experience working with HTML and CSS.

 

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Strong news judgment.
  • Outstanding writing skills, particularly for both on-air and digital platforms. We expect to see writing samples.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues in multiple departments/divisions.
  • Strong interest in local and regional news and general depth of knowledge about issues and current events.
  • Ability to work with changing deadlines and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated research skills in a professional capacity.
  • Familiarity w/online content management systems.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to work shifts of early mornings.
  • Required to occasionally move about in an office environment to access file cabinets, printers, etc., and remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

    • Required to move about in an office environment and sit for extended periods of time.
    • Frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes and simple grasping.
