Position Summary:

 

If you're passionate about innovative, public service journalism, KPCC is the place for you.

 

As Managing Editor, you'll drive the strategic vision for our daily, enterprise and investigative journalism.  You'll supervise a talented group of editors, reporters and producers and collaborate with platform leaders to provide in depth coverage on key issues facing Southern California.

 

The ideal candidate is passionate about digging up stories with and for our local audiences. You understand that the local in Los Angeles is often global and are dedicated to finding new ways to serve our community's information needs.

 

You'll also be thinking about the big picture. What are the emerging storylines and community needs that we can address? How can we tell those stories creatively and distribute them successfully? How might we better reflect the experience of living in one of the most diverse cities on the planet?

Position Responsibility:

  • Set editorial agenda across news desks and programs.
  • Oversee daily operations of editors, reporters and producers and develop consistent narratives for major stories across platforms.
  • Identify improvements in work flow in order to increase cross-team collaboration.
  • Plan long-term coverage across a range of beats including housing, immigration, education, politics, the environment, to name a few.
  • Foster a creative and productive work environment.
  • Foster a multi platform approach for KPCC's journalism.
  • Coordinate coverage with senior platform managers.
  • Find ways for our communities to participate in journalism on a daily and long-term basis.
  • Work closely with our Audience Insights Manager to assess the health of our storytelling, and make data informed decisions.
  • Ensure a diversity of views and voices are represented in KPCC reporting.
  • Develop ideas and avenues of inquiry for original investigations.
  • Set measurable performance goals for editors and reporters.
  • Demonstrate digital forward thinking throughout the newsgathering process.
  • Lead coordination of major enterprise reports and projects.
  • Oversee budgets related to newsgathering efforts.
  • Oversee editorial collaborations with; KQED, KPBS, Capitol Public Radio, CALmatters (The California Dream Project), APM (Marketplace, Minnesota Public Radio newsroom) and with external partners in nonprofit and commercial news organizations and universities.
  • Manage daily and weekly news planning process through effective system of meetings, one-on-one communication and use of electronic/written communication systems.
  • Understand strategic company priorities, how the team(s) supports and fits into these goals and communicate this clearly to line staff clearly and consistently.
  • On occasion, represent SCPR at donor and community events.
  • Provide clear guidance, feedback and supervision to staff. This includes editorial aspects and performance assessment, identifying professional development plans.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Combined 10 years or more of proven, successful experience in journalism (reporting, editing or producing).
  • Significant experience in newsgathering and storytelling on digital platforms.
  • Strong management skills, including ability to teach, coach and advance skills of those under direct supervision.
  • Knowledge and commitment to the mission of public media.
  • Demonstrated ability in trying new things.
  • Understanding of the emerging field of engaged journalism.

  • Ability to develop complex story ideas that provide analysis and add context.
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.

  • Well-established contacts and knowledge of the journalism community.
  • Commitment to public service journalism.
  • Ability to encourage creativity and high editorial standards.
  • A creative and playful disposition ' this is a senior role, but it's also filled with fun and energetic reports!

 

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience reporting or editing in California.
  • Knowledge of public media.
  • Fluency in Spanish or other languages commonly used in Southern California.
  • Training in human centered design.
