Position Summary:

 

KPCC seeks a Producer for one of its flagship programs to serve one of the largest and most diverse public media audiences in the nation. The Producer for AirTalk develops signature multi-platform segments for this daily public affairs program, identifying issues, conversations and guests that connect with a uniquely Southern Californian audience. The successful candidate will help expand a dynamic and interactive live radio program to a wider audience via broadcast, social media, live events, on-demand and beyond.

Position Responsibility:

  • Pitches story and interview ideas. 
  • Researches and books newsmakers, and writes news items for host.
  • Writes and edits interviews for AirTalk.
  • Oversees the production of the show and ensures editorial and production standards are met.
  • Monitors and mines social media platforms for news updates.
  • Directs the work of associate producers and news clerks.
  • Prepares sound and ensures produced sound is ready for air. 
  • Makes content and editorial decisions in collaboration with host and senior producer.
  • Fills in for senior producer as needed.
  • Produces audio from reporters and outside news services, listening for content and quality. 
  • Works with digital team to update content on Web site. 
  • Helps train news clerks and new fill-in assistant and associate producers.
  • Other duties as required.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Five or more years production, editorial or related experience.

 

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • A passion for hard news, with a voracious appetite for news consumption at both the local and national levels.
  • Excellent news judgment.
  • Ability to identify and pursue leads and newsmakers that will result in headline news.
  • Digital audio editing and field production skills.
  • Experienced researcher with excellent writing skills.
  • Proven ability to contribute to a positive, diverse, creative, high performance culture.
  • Strong leadership skills, ability to lead and manage change and advocate for program/resources/staff.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to evaluate content/quality/sound and act decisively with sound judgment.   
  • Knowledgeable in live broadcast.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure with a team and to meet deadlines. 
  • Critical reading and listening skills are required.
