Position Summary: 

As general assignment weekend reporter, you will cover daily news in the Twin Cities. You will work closely with the weekend editor, reporting on daily news and preparing newscast reports and features for air over the weekend and Monday morning. The schedule for this position is four 10-hour days, Thursdays-Sundays. This is a great opportunity to work for a nationally-award winning newsroom. 

You have strong, fast writing and reporting skills along with an innate digital sensibility understanding how mobile, social and visual tools can be used in news reporting and audience engagement. Daily assignments will cover a broad range of topics. You may also be asked to develop specialties and expertise in subjects, as needed.

Position Responsibility: 

  • Provide daily news coverage for newscasts and digital platforms
  • Regularly file radio features for Saturday/Sunday magazine programs and for Morning Edition
  • Understand key issues and news of note in the Twin Cities
  • Build knowledge and sources in the Twin Cities
  • At times, live blog news events
  • Contribute to social media
  • Collaborate with other radio and visual journalists
  • Provide live reports on air, as needed
  • Participate in special projects, when assigned
  • Other duties as assigned 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of two years of reporting experience as a radio reporter or staff writer at a daily newspaper, web site or other news organization 

Preferred Skills and Experience: 

  • Experience reporting in a metropolitan area

  • Excellent reporting and writing skills
  • Ability to write spot news quickly and accurately
  • Reporting and writing on deadline
  • A flair for storytelling
  • Superior critical thinking ability
  • Reliable news judgment
  • Effective use of social media in newsgathering and dissemination
  • Ability to think creatively about web content video, visuals, additional charts/graphs, etc.
  • Understanding of journalistic principles and ethics
  • Knowledge of the principles of Minnesota's open meetings and open records laws
  • Basic data reporting skills and familiarity with using data in reporting
  • Ability to use social media to engage audiences
  • Some audio editing experience preferred
  • Able to generate compelling story ideas
  • Ability to work on broad variety of complex assignments
