Position Summary:


The Associate Producer, On Demand will assist in producing program material for KPCC's on demand programs and original podcasts. The successful candidate has a passion for audio in all its forms; a sharp ear for sound and storytelling, a ton of ideas and the ability to dive deep into subject matter while multi-tasking other production elements. S/he is a creative, collaborative producer who looks for ways to successfully generate content that delivers on our public service mission.


The Associate Producer, On Demand will assist the host, producers and other contributors to the program by generating story and interview ideas; conducting research and assisting in arranging interviews; and writing news and program copy, as well as production material. Content for digital media is an integral part of KPCC's product, and employee will be expected to contribute audio and digital material.

Position Responsibility:

  • Perform soup-to-nuts production tasks, including identifying and interviewing sources, booking, prepping hosts, writing scripts, researching and fact-checking, editing audio.
  • Edits podcast episodes.
  • Prepares scripts and host copy.
  • Generate podcast ideas that are in line with KPCC's public service journalism mission.
  • Assist producers, hosts and others by pitching story and interview ideas.
  • Assist content teams in providing content for NPR One.
  • Prepare digital copy to accompany podcast.
  • Collaborate with social media editor as needed for promotion of on demand content.
  • Work with other stakeholders within the organization to ensure that our content will have audience and sponsor appeal.
  • Collaborate with outside contributors and other talent.
  • Record in the field and in studio; travel may be required.
  • With engineer and other staff, imagine and execute sound design concepts.
  • Manage multiple projects, deadlines and responsibilities at once, keeping editors, hosts, producers and others updated.
  • With social media, video, digital and marketing teams, create audio assets for web, Facebook, Twitter, etc. to help reach big and diverse audiences.


Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
  • 2 + years' experience in content development and production for: podcast, terrestrial or satellite radio, or similar audio medium.
  • Experience with news writing, interviewing, and editing.
  • Experience working collaboratively with creative and editorial talent.
  • Experience with research, reporting, interviewing, storytelling, audio editing and sound design.


Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Understanding of emerging, digital-first media models.
  • Fluency in audio editing with ProTools, and knowledge of DAVID, CMS, and other systems for broadcast and digital delivery of audio.
  •  Top-notch organizational skills, attention to detail, deadlines and time-management.
  •  Excellent communication skills, written and spoken.
  •  Ability to multitask.
  • An independent work ethic combined with a love for and patience with the collaborative process.
  • Ability to produce programs that meet SCPR standards.
  • Proven ability to contribute to a positive, diverse, creative, high performance culture.
  • Ability to advocate for program/resources/staff.
  • Ability to evaluate content/quality/sound and act decisively w/sound judgment.
  • Knowledge of new media applications for digital distribution, audience engagement and community networking.


Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience using ENPS or equivalent.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin or other languages desired.
