Position Summary:

Local Current interns are part-time employees who work with the Digital Music Team to report on Minnesota music for The Current's Local Current blog. Under the supervision of digital producers, interns research and write stories, and may also contribute photography and other content for the blog and associated social media. Additionally, interns assist with production of The Current's online features such as in-studio sessions, archived radio episodes, and event listings. 

This is a part-time, flexible role, averaging approximately three to five hours of work per week as assigned both onsite at the Kling Public Media Center in St. Paul, where Minnesota Public Radio is headquartered, and offsite as needed. Interns will write reported news stories, features, interviews, reviews, and other content as part of our ongoing coverage of local music. 

Interns can expect to develop skills such as:

  • Reporting and writing music-related blog posts: reviews, previews, interviews, and more.
  • Working with a team including The Current's digital team, members of The Current's broadcast staff, and other interns to shape coverage of music releases and news stories.
  • Using WordPress and Minnesota Public Radio's custom content management system to assemble digital features, including text, audio, photos, and video.
  • Creating compelling and informative multimedia content for social media such as Twitter, Snapchat, and Facebook. 

The ideal candidate for this position is someone who's just starting to consider a potential career in journalism, music, media, or marketing. This position would be appropriate for a student in college, or someone at a comparable point of professional development. 

Duration:                                Twelve months

Anticipated start date:                              September 1, 2017

Hours:                                     Approximately five hours/week

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • This position is focused specifically on Minnesota music, so candidates should be regularly in the state residing here, attending college here, or otherwise routinely present in Minnesota. 

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Successful applicants will have strong writing skills as well as flexible skills with digital media including social media.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing.
  • Must have the ability to meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Must have strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products. 

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience in music journalism is preferred, but not required.
  • An interest in music.
  • An appreciation for public radio.

  • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

    • Occasional exposure to prevalent weather conditions
