As Executive Director, On Demand Content, you will lead the creation of dynamic new content aimed at building audiences in the on-demand audio and video space for Marketplace. You will oversee  a growing on-demand team charged with creating hit podcasts and must-see video. You will oversee new content development for on-demand, establishing the strategy and processes that are inclusive and aimed at nurturing creative ideas and people. You will work  with people across locations. You'll need to have extraordinary management and people skills, and the ability and drive to raise the profile, sound and shape of all Marketplace podcasts, and be a creative player across the editorial team. This position will also oversee our growing video team ensuring alignment with the overall editorial vision and standards.


You will be a key member of an exciting new senior content leadership team which includes the Executive Editor, News and the Executive Director, Digital. Together, you will work with the new Chief Content Officer to create the leadership, vision, strategic planning, and administration of Marketplace's content team, positioning Marketplace for growth on all platforms.

Position Summary:

The Executive Director, On Demand Content oversees the vision and strategy for on-demand content, fostering new ideas, developing new talent, and expanding the on-demand portfolio for audiences beyond the traditional core public radio audience while maintaining Marketplace's mission and focus. S/he provides editorial leadership over podcast and video content teams. S/he will identify and nurture new external production partnerships. S/he will build strong collaborative relationships with the business side of the enterprise, working closely with marketing, communications, and revenue departments.


A significant focus will be on creating a culture where new ideas thrive. S/he will create content approaches that welcome new ideas, provide clear direction, communication and feedback for internal and external producers. Marketplace will pilot and test several new on-demand offerings each year, explore additional ways to tell Marketplace stories in video and possible other non-radio platforms. The Executive Director, On Demand Content will also develop, evaluate and strengthen Marketplace's suite of existing podcasts.


This position requires a highly collaborative, creative, independent leader who can work across the organization and manage change. S/he will be responsible for creating new on-demand and video content and developing a team that is data-informed, audience-centric and competitive in today's fast-changing media landscape.


Reporting to the Chief Content Officer, the Executive Director, On Demand Content works collaboratively with the Executive Director, Digital and Executive Editor, News, to align content development direction and priorities with the overall Marketplace multi-platform content vision. 


Position Responsibility:

  • Provide the overall vision and implementation plan for Marketplace's on demand strategy.
  • Oversee new on demand development projects, ensuring the Marketplace voice and storytelling style is successfully translated in new content offers.
  • Develop evaluation criteria and new on demand development processes with specific milestones/go no-go points. Identify, pilot and develop the most promising ideas for maximum audience and revenue potential.
  • Continually evaluate existing on demand offerings to determine ability to meet goals for reach, relevance and revenue. Make final decision on additional seasons/ongoing production after collaborating with revenue, marketing, CCO and other editorial stakeholders.
  • Develop metrics for success and meet targets for on demand and video.
  • Hire, supervise, train, and manage direct staff through providing work direction, constructive performance coaching, mentorship, performance meetings, and on-going feedback.
  • Foster a creative and productive work environment. Create development opportunities and individualized development plans for staff and training to enhance skills and foster growth
  • Oversee budgeting for new content production, including personnel and non-salary expenses, annual as well as long-range forecasting, monitoring and compliance.
  • Support the ongoing work of revenue areas by drafting the framework for grant proposals; meet with individual and institutional donors and manage received grants as required.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • 8+ years of relevant work experience, to include strategic planning, program management and successful content development experience.
  • 5+ years of experience at supervisory/management level.
  • 3-5 years of experience with digital production and best-practices.
  • Proven track record of meeting financial goals and key business objectives.


 Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Experience developing, launching and fostering new content, especially in the podcast and non-radio spaces.
  • Distinguished track record in content production including developing producers, on-air talent, and external partnerships.
  • Proven strategic thinking, budget development, prioritization and management skills.
  • Ability to critically interpret audience research.
  • Creative problem solver; ability to work cross functionally to identify and realize deliverables required for growth.


Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience managing people remotely
  • Interest in economics and its impact on societal issues
  • Highly networked in the independent production and digital production communities.
