As Executive Editor, you'll drive the strategic vision for Marketplace's daily and long-range news coverage, continuing our mission to raise the economic intelligence of the country through unorthodox and explanatory storytelling, our signature sound, and our pursuit of distinct angles that make the economy make sense to our audience.

 

As Executive Editor, News for Marketplace, you will head a dynamic and creative team of news editors, reporters and program producers, setting direction for newsgathering across all platforms. You will be responsible for growing and developing the team needed to build daily, feature and in-depth news content with lasting impact in a modern enterprise that is data-informed, audience-centric and competitive in today's fast-changing media landscape.

 

You will be a key member of an exciting new senior content leadership team which includes the Executive Director, On Demand Content and Executive Director, Digital. Together, you will work with the new Chief Content Officer to create the leadership, vision, strategic planning, and administration of Marketplace's content team, positioning Marketplace for growth on all platforms.

Position Summary:

The Executive Editor, News oversees the news coverage for Marketplace across all platforms. She/he sets coverage agenda and priorities across the organization and oversees all news desks and programs.  S/he provides coverage direction on a daily basis, ensuring there is a consistent through-line and hand-offs between programs and digital platforms for major news stories. S/he will determine distinct angles to deepen and grow signature news-driven journalism, ensuring long-term planning and coordination of major projects.

 

She or he builds a high performing, collaborative news team that achieves Marketplace's editorial goals and supports Marketplace's programmatic, audience, and business goals on all platforms. S/he has overall management of the programs, ensuring the highest journalistic standards as well as overall style, tone and approach that is consistent with the Marketplace editorial vision.

 

The Executive Editor, News anticipates the evolving media landscape and makes sure that the programs and show staff respond and adapt to changing audience habits and interests. The Executive Editor, News demonstrates digital-forward thinking across the newsgathering process, making sure that needs of audiences on digital platforms are met.

 

The Executive Editor, News demonstrates a commitment to people, issues, ideas, and trends related to diversity, whether they be ethnic, religious, gender, age, or geographic, and holds the program staff accountable

 

She or he develops, manages and is accountable for the newsgathering and program editorial budget. S/he continually looks for ways to ensure the most effective use of resources. She or he is responsible for hiring, leading, motivating and evaluating staff so that they develop to their fullest potential.

 

Reporting to the Chief Content Officer, the Executive Editor, News works collaboratively with the Executive Director, On Demand Content and Executive Director, Digital to align news/program direction and priorities with the overall Marketplace multi-platform content vision.  

 

 Position Responsibility:

  • Responsible for setting newsgathering editorial agenda across news desks and programs, ensuring all available platforms are served on a daily basis.
  • Oversees the daily operations of the editorial units. Develops through-line/consistent narrative for major news stories across all content.
  • Has overall responsibility for the show(s) identity, content, and sound to ensure consistency with overall editorial vision. Explores ways to manifest the programs' vision, through "signature" program content and by identifying, with the Executive Director On Demand Content and Executive Director Digital, new ways to implement the news vision through content choices on all platforms.
  • Demonstrates digital forward-thinking across newsgathering process. All show and editorial staff contribute digital ideas or content on a consistent basis.
  • Leads short and long-term strategic planning for news coverage and signature content of programs and is responsible for achieving editorial goals and results.
  • Leads coordination of major Marketplace enterprise projects.
  • Develops, monitors and is accountable for editorial budgets related to newsgathering and programs.
  • Hires, supervises, trains, and manages staff through coaching, mentorship, performance meetings and on-going feedback.
  • Fosters a creative, collaborative and productive work environment.  Creates development opportunities and individualized development plans for staff and training to enhance skills and foster growth.
  • Continually looks for ways to improve and simplify processes to free up creative time, maximize resources.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in journalism, broadcast communications, or related field of study
  • 10+ years of proven successful professional experience in news journalism/daily national newsgathering/ news content with a major organization or production company.
  • Minimum of 7 years of significant and increasing management and leadership experience with demonstrated ability to create, lead, inspire and motivate high performing teams
  • Experience in a multi-platform news environment.
  • Budget management and track record of meeting financial goals and key business objectives.

 

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to develop and communicate editorial vision and direction.    
  • Proven ability to design and produce news journalism of national scope, breadth, and interest.
  • Experience with digital audience engagement, and community networking
  • Ability to develop and maintain large complex budgets and overall knowledge of financial management
  • Widely read and broadly educated, well-informed about news, current events, economics, history, philosophy, public policy, the arts, humanities, and entertainment sectors.
  • Outstanding track record in leadership of people, from recruitment to training and development. Leadership skills and ability to motivate employees and develop high performing teams.
  • Ability to consistently work well with others and to inspire and lead the staff, including staff in remote locations.
  • Experience with and knowledge of the ethics and practices of journalism.
  • Outstanding strategic thinking and planning, decision-making, and communication abilities.
  • Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of public media.
  • Understanding of credibility, personality and value of Marketplace brand.
  • Ability to build and maintain complex internal and external relationships with industry professionals and potential funders.

 

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience as a working journalist in a broadcast news environment. Experience with radio a plus.
  • Interest in economics and its impact on societal issues.
