Position Summary:


Got data analysis down and want to grow your management chops? KPCC is looking for a player/coach to run our data efforts. We're looking for a good journalist who can pull in and analyze data, code and supervise another team member and the occasional intern. Creativity and a proven ability to translate ideas whether yours or others into well-presented projects is a must.


The successful candidate will work with newsroom editors, reporters and producers to spot important trends and patterns and gather, build, parse and visualize large data sets to help deepen KPCC's coverage.


He or she will work with the newsroom to develop creative solutions on how to present information to a broad audience, as well as out-of-the-box solutions for importing and converting datasets. The News Editor, Data is expected to use his/her background as a data analyst and developer to find new, innovative ways to marry the two to produce multimedia pieces that visually illustrate the news and embody a sense of discovery.


On occasion, the News Editor, Data will be called upon to edit broadcast scripts and digital content as needed to carry out the mission of telling data-based stories across platforms.

 Position Responsibility:

  • Engages with reporters, editors and/or producers to develop data-driven digital daily and enterprise content, individually and as a team.
  • Works with newsroom staff to develop data-driven digital assets to complement news coverage, including visuals (photos and video), graphics, interactives and social media outreach strategy.
  • Identifies and tests tools, techniques and practices for data and information visualization. Identifies, collects and formats data sources for visualization.
  • Translates wireframes and requirements into visually compelling and attractive designs.
  • As appropriate, edits broadcast and web-mobile stories reporting on results of data-focused reporting.
  • Leads planning and development of data-driven content and integrate reporters' work into ongoing coverage for daily broadcast shows, web site, mobile apps and magazine and talk shows.
  • Assists in development and implementation of data editorial and programming policies to achieve consistent, reliable quality and depth.
  • Participates in editorial leadership team, helping plan and execute coverage across desks, develop new approaches for cross-platform data reporting and create a lively atmosphere of creative endeavor and journalistic excellence.
  • Helps coordinate coverage and attend daily editorial meetings. Work with other members of the management team to provide strong, consistent leadership of the department.
  • Works closely with Managing Editor, News and Investigations to identify recurring data sets and long-term projects that will add depth to ongoing KPCC coverage.
  • Identifies opportunities and builds tools that can quickly visualize complex data sets for daily stories and longer term features. Develops ideas/proposals for coverage streams, special reports, and editorially-driven custom applications.
  • Ensures that all materials produced for the site meet program standards and practices, including standards of accuracy, fairness, objectivity and balance.
  • Consults regularly with Online Producers and Online Managing Editor over metrics and identifies opportunities to track success, grow traffic and engagement online.
  • Hires, supervises, trains, and manages direct staff through providing work direction, constructive performance coaching, mentorship, performance meetings, and on-going feedback. 
  • Fosters a creative and productive work environment.  Creates development opportunities and individualized development plans for staff and training to enhance skills and foster growth.
  • Provides ongoing insight and counsel to other shows and departments about their online and digital projects and ambitions. Maintains and shares awareness of industry trends and new technologies and explore those that would benefit KPCC and the audience.
  • Represents newsroom internally and externally.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in design, informatics, journalism or similar field.
  • 4-8 years' journalism experience in traditional media including a minimum of 5 years hands-on experience in data analysis and/or building data-driven news applications/interactives.
  • Minimum 6 years' experience working with data sets and using data visualization tools to present qualitative and quantitative information in a website environment.
  • Experience with a wide set of tools and the comfort to get dirty when data doesn't come in a pristine condition.


Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Web savvy reporting, a consuming interest in news and politics.
  • Quick, creative development.
  • Strong story-framing skills including basic proficiency in all SCPR platforms (web, mobile, broadcast).
  • Strong knowledge of Javascript, including the use of charting/visualization libraries, MVC frameworks (such as Backbone) and object-oriented programming.
  • First-rate writer and communicator with the ability to quickly identify news stories of interest.
  • Has an understanding of need for interpretative reporting on complex issues.
  • Ability to develop complex story ideas that provide analysis and add context.
  • Knowledge of AP Style.
  • Working knowledge of open-source GIS tools (TileMill , QGIS or CartoDB).
  • Comfortable working with, importing/exporting and converting a variety of data formats (.csv, .txt, .xls, .shp, .geojson, .kml, .json).
  • Deep familiarity with HTML and Web publishing tools.
  • Working knowledge of scripting languages (Python, Ruby, php) and related web frameworks (Django, Rails, Codeignitor).
  • Good research, organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure with discretion and mature judgment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to maintain productive and positive communication with co-workers.
  • Ability to provide creative multimedia ideas for online interactive projects.
  • Knowledge of how to use data and design to foster engagement and knowledge sharing.
  • Knowledge of data visualization tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new tools.
  • Working knowledge of relational databases and how to perform basic to intermediate quantitative analysis.
  • Ability to interpret needs, objectives, and direction from multiple sources of input.
  • Familiarity with technical issues around web development.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to present technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Leadership and personnel skills and ability to develop high performing teams.
  • Strong communication skills and passion for building community relationships via networking both in-person and through social media/online.
