This position is an opportunity for a dynamic leader to take the helm of Marketplace with Kai Ryssdal, and develop it to the next level. As Executive Producer, you'll lead a talented team to tell stories that matter, connecting the dots on how the economy works and how it's affecting the lives of people across the country. You'll manage the big picture and the small details, overseeing the creative evolution and development of the show. You'll also be a driver of innovation, developing new ways to tell Marketplace stories across platforms.


You should be a creative producer and showrunner with a keen ear for radio, strong digital chops, and huge ambition. You'll need to have extraordinary management and people skills, and the ability and drive to raise the profile, sound and ambition of Marketplace. 


You'll work closely with the host of the program to expand his role as a representative of the Marketplace brand, and serve as advocate and ambassador for Marketplace internally and externally.


This position requires a highly collaborative leader with the ability to work effectively across the Marketplace enterprise with New Content and Digital Content areas as they expand. S/he will also work collaboratively with business leaders across locations and time zones at APM.

Position Responsibility:

  • Show runner for Marketplace, setting and communicating editorial vision and standards
  • Works closely with program host and production team to innovate program through development of new segments, use of different radio production techniques and foster an environment of creativity and experimentation
  • Senior assigning editor for the program ensuring forward-looking, insightful and innovative daily news coverage
  • Oversee program editorial direction is consistent with overall Marketplace content vision and strategy and ensures production standards are met
  • Serve as senior quality control staff member for program material
  • Foster a creative and productive work environment. Creates development opportunities and development plans for staff and training to enhance skills and foster growth
  • Hire, supervise, train and manage direct staff through coaching, mentorship, performance meetings and ongoing feedback. Involve HR on performance issues as needed.
  • Help develop and execute strategies to increase audience
  • Initiate and oversee special program series, coordinating coverage with digital team and new content development areas as well as APM business and marketing team.
  • Help develop and communicates the vision for the program
  • Responsible for holiday staff and program planning
  • Manage program budget
  • Assist with fundraising as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned


 Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 7 years' journalism experience including three years at management/supervisory level-experience must demonstrate an ability to foster high standards and an ability to coach, inspire and lead
  • Experience in radio news production, particularly news magazines programs
  • Demonstrated experience working successfully with on-air personalities

  • Solid news judgment
  • Flexible under daily deadline pressure, able to work effectively and collaboratively with hosts and other staff
  • High journalistic standards and a vision of what (s)he wants show to be each day and over the long term
  • Ability to say no diplomatically to freelancers, peers, and senior staff
  • Must have sense for the Marketplace style, rhythm, and sound
  • Highly motivated, well organized and flexible
  • Must care passionately about excellence in all aspects of the program. Must have tremendous energy, ambition, and drive to make Marketplace programs even better
  • Ability to research and develop programming that assimilates financial/consumer information
  • Strong oral communication, interviewing skills; writing and editing skills
  • Leadership and personnel skills and ability to develop high performing teams
  • Ability to motivate, train and grow employees
  • Ability to consistently work well with others and to inspire and lead the staff
  • Audio editing


Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Show-running a national program

  • 3 producers
  • 1 intern

  • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
