Position Summary:


It's an exciting time to join Marketplace, a public media enterprise and the most listened-to business program in the country. You'll be part of a team of dynamic professionals dedicated to raising the economic intelligence of the American public. Currently the Marketplace portfolio of programs has more than 14 million weekly listeners, and over the next five years our strategic plan dramatically builds on that strong foundation.


As Marketplace's development leader, you will create the vision for and implement new innovative fundraising strategies that engage our listeners to support Marketplace's major multi-platform growth initiatives. Specifically, you will be responsible for the success of all individual and institutional giving and donor relations efforts, and for helping to build a culture of philanthropy within the organization. In concert with Marketplace and American Public Media colleagues you will grow annual revenue from $2.3 million to over $6.8 million over the next three years and participate in raising $5 million in revenue for Marketplace's expansion as part of the MPR/APM Capital Campaign.


Utilizing the power of online and social media communities, as well as events and other creative outreach efforts, you will build a pipeline of new donors, build donor retention and significantly increase annual and lifetime giving from supporters of Marketplace. You will begin by focusing on building a foundation of annual donors who become the pipeline for major gifts and further engagement in the organization. Ultimately you will develop a comprehensive, integrated development program to support growth and innovation for Marketplace.


The development program currently involves two direct reports in Los Angeles and colleagues in the American Public Media Development team in St. Paul, Minnesota, APM's headquarters.




  • Create, implement and lead Marketplaces fundraising vision and strategy.
  • Create innovative fundraising initiatives that support the goals set out in Marketplace's long-term business plan.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive, integrated development plan for Marketplace that drives synergies across the organization and drives annual and multi-year revenue.
  • Set annual and multi-year fundraising performance and revenue goals.
  • Develop and manage Marketplace individual and institutional giving and donor engagement, which includes online giving and communications, events, direct mail, stewardship and donor relations.
  • Collaborate and work with Marketplace staff and Marketplace Board of Advisors
  • Work cross-functionally in a matrix organizational structure, collaborating with senior executives, divisional leaders and managing directors from other Marketplace/APM departments.
  • Serve as key liaison with APM's development team. Collaborate with this revenue team on fundraising strategies, prospects research, gift processing and development policies.
  • Hires, supervises, trains, and manages direct staff through providing work direction, constructive performance coaching, mentorship, performance meetings, and on-going feedback.
  • Fosters a creative and productive work environment. Creates development opportunities and individualized development plans for staff and training to enhance skills and foster growth.


Required Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree, CFRE or ACFRE designation is preferred.
  • Minimum 8-12 years' development experience required.
  • Five or more years supervisory/management experience is required - must demonstrate an ability to foster high standards and an ability to coach, inspire and lead.
  • Demonstrated success managing and growing a large annual fund program that employs a variety of tactics, including online solicitation, direct mail, tele-fundraising and other direct response strategies.
  • Demonstrated success utilizing social media to drive membership/donor growth strategies.
  • Demonstrated track record in meeting financial goals.
  • Demonstrated success identifying, engaging, soliciting, stewarding and recognizing individual and institutional donors. 
  • Demonstrated success utilizing predictive and other analysis to identify prospective donors and members.


Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:


  • Demonstrated success creating an integrated development program and energized team culture that results in significant revenue growth. Program experience should include online giving and communications, events, direct mail, major individual and institutional giving, stewardship and donor relations, preferably in a radio public broadcasting environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in securing significant revenue in multiple ways.
  • Demonstrated experience with donor data and CRM systems. Ability to lead others in identifying and prioritizing data capture and reports.
  • Strong managerial, leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Knowledge of best practices for development.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to create impactful, donor-centered appeals and stewardship communications.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to create personal relationships and to communicate effectively delivering exceptional customer service to a variety of stakeholders, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated success working in matrixed organizations or teams.
  • Knowledge and experience with online giving, including peer to peer fundraising.
  • Ability to recognize among annual giving donors the potential for significant major and planned gifts.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing demands, while maintaining a commitment to excellence.
  • Ability to work cooperatively to achieve common goals; support cooperation, collaboration and the sharing of information.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to quickly and regularly adjust strategy based on giving trends.
  • Passion for public media broadcasting, as well as for community education and outreach.
  • Excellent computer skills related to the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
