Position Summary: 

We are looking for customer service focused, tech-savvy, team player with a passion for MPR and all things benefits related! The Benefits Manager is responsible for the management of all employee benefit programs for American Public Media Group and its subsidiaries. This position will hold accountability for the design, development, communication, implementation and administration of consistent and equitable benefit programs, policies, and practices designed to attract, retain, and motivate employees.  Naysayers, information hoarders, self-promoters, the highly volatile, or anyone who has ever used "that's the way we've always done it" as an excuse to avoid change need not apply.

Position Responsibility: 

  • Evaluate and develop competitive and cost effective employee benefit plans and programs, to include: medical and dental, sick and vacation time, short and long term disability, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, etc.
  • Design effective communication strategies and materials for employees to understand and utilize benefits in the most effective way, taking into account their individual situation.
  • Conduct 1:1 employee meetings and employee group meetings to educate on APMG's benefit program features. Respond to questions received via the benefit email inbox. 
  • Review and analyze current employee benefit programs, and explore the integration of new benefit programs. Evaluate prevalent benefit programs in the marketplace to ensure competitiveness of APMG's programs and legal compliance.
  • Conduct management reporting to assess benefit plan effectiveness and plan usage. Ensure policies and practices are consistently applied. 
  • Develop company cost information for new and existing plans, and make recommendations concerning cost sharing between employer and employee. Manage applicable benefit program billing and invoicing.
  • Serve as the Safety Officer, working with legal and facilities to address employee safety issues.
  • Serve as key liaison with APMG's benefit broker.
  • Manage the annual benefit open enrollment process, to include: the creation of a project plan, system set up, communications, employee educational meetings, and make individual and plan changes in the HR system and related vendor systems.
  • Manage relationships with carriers, vendors, and brokers on matters such as plan design, plan administration, issue resolution, contracts, coverage, and renewals.
  • Fulfill all reporting, compliance, and disclosure requirements of all relevant government rules and regulations, including the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA).
  • Keep abreast of regulatory changes, determine how the Company can comply with such changes, and analyze/determine system needs to demonstrate compliance.
  • Manage 403(b) retirement plan, including administrative functions, recommending enhancements, and addressing employee questions.
  • Administer the worker's compensation program, to include: advising and counseling the ergonomics team, filing claims, monitoring the progress of injured employee, and resolving open claims. 
  • Manage the leave process including policy determination, employee education and calculation.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in HR management, Business or related field or equivalent work experience.
  • 6+ years of related work experience in Human Resources; including 4+ years of experience in benefit management and administration.
  • Experience with benefit plan design and compliance reporting.
  • Experience with HRIS systems or similar databases, and knowledge of how to maximize automation around benefits administration and user interface.
  • Significant experience using Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and other pc based software.

  • High level of knowledge of all standard benefits plans, especially health plans. Understanding of how they are developed, negotiated, and administered.

  • High level of knowledge of all applicable employment laws as they pertain to benefit plans.
  • Strong communication skills to work with senior management as well as all other employee levels.

  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities.
  • Flexibility and comfort level with changing priorities.
  • Problem resolution skills at both a functional and strategic level.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Passion for creating systems and order out of chaos, and the ability to work well with both linear and non-linear thinkers.
  • Tech-savvy with strong computer skills including Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point and experience with HRIS systems. Ability and enthusiasm to learn new software and systems.

Preferred Skills and Experience: 

  • Experience with California specific laws and regulations.
  • Experience working with employees in multiple locations, both nationally and internationally
  • Experience working with the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
  • Work experience using Kronos HRIS software.
  • Work experience as an HR Generalist.
  • CEBS designation.
  • Experience with both non-profit and for-profit companies.
