Who We Are:

Southern California Public Radio (SCPR) is a member-supported public media network whose mission is to strengthen the civic and cultural bonds that unite Southern California's diverse communities by providing the highest quality news and information service on air at 89.3 KPCC, online at LAist.com and through KPCC In Person. Since our founding in 1999, SCPR has been a fast growing, innovative, multi-platform public service newsroom. Every day, our staff helps audiences catch up on the latest headlines, solve the complexities of life in Southern California, and connect curious communities to one another.

Position Summary:

This is a temporary, full-time, six month position, with an option for an additional six months.

The Emerging Digital Platforms Producer role will focus on optimizing and creating digital audio content for voice UI (ex. smart speakers), and adapting the journalism and storytelling created and produced by SCPR's content teams for emerging product experiences (ex. the Google News on Assistant experience, on which we are a pilot publisher). The Emerging Digital Platforms Producer will work on the product team and coordinate with the newsroom and content divisions to develop best practices for delivering an audio news product, optimizing user experience across emerging platforms through continuous testing and learning from various approaches; and to establish SCPR as a leader in the space with new product experiences.

  • Adapt existing audio to create new audio products (ex. Google News on Assistant)
  • Identify and implement best practices across emerging voice and smart speaker platforms to help SCPR stand out as a publisher
  • Adapt or select and publish stories that SCPR's content teams have created and ensure they are optimized for voice UI experiences (ex. Google News on Assistant)
  • Optimize the exposure and user experience of our presence on emerging platforms
  • Host new and emerging audio experiences, as necessary
  • Leverage modern CMS tools to publish edited audio
  • Produce original sonic branding and call-to-action audio spots according to business goals
  • Analyze data about what stories, topics and techniques perform the best with the audience to improve our offerings
  • Coordinate with reporters, editors and producers to adapt existing workflows to produce the best-quality product for the platform
  • Take a creative approach to how we can stand out as a media brand and attract engaged audiences as these platforms and experiences evolve

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree and equivalent working experience producing content (4+ years)
  • Outstanding product instincts, specifically how technology and media are evolving together to meet audiences where they are going to be
  • Working knowledge of how media companies are adapting their coverage for the smart speaker / voice assistant / screenless device space
  • Resilient and resourceful in adapting existing newsroom workflows to the emerging platform technical specifications
  • Thrive in a daily news setting and love building collaborative relationships with colleagues
  • Have the highest ethical standards and a deep commitment to the mission of public media

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Skill in digital audio editing and publishing software and processes
  • Working knowledge of smart speakers / voice assistants / screenless devices and how media companies can use them as content distributors
  • Superb oral and written communication skills in an interdisciplinary team environment
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Ability to balance small task management with creative big-picture product thinking
  • Experience using modern CMS platforms
  • Sharp assessment skills with an ability for ruthless prioritization
  • Comfortable with running lean
  • Ability to learn new technology quickly
  • Excellent at translating abstract content and product concepts to stakeholders
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Become and remain a member in good standing of SAG-AFTRA by the thirtieth (30th) day of employment.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in product development is a plus
  • Experience with adapting content for digital platforms and using social media to engage audiences
  • Demonstrated thirst for news
  • Deep knowledge of Los Angeles / Southern California
