Your Role:

Are you looking for a role in which you can learn the expanding field of major gift development as part of a successful, comprehensive development team working to advance a leading Minnesota non-profit organization?  Minnesota Public Radio | American Public Media seeks an Associate Development Officer (ADO) to join its Major & Planned Giving team to learn the major gifts profession and contribute to our mission by engaging prospective donors who may wish to give above-average charitable support.

In this entry-level role, you will do important work to engage MPR|APM members who have the financial capacity for and interest in higher level giving. We will support you in a step-by-step creative process to invite selected members to have a closer and expanded philanthropic relationship with MPR|APM. Funding for this position is secured through June, 2021. Our aim is to recruit an enthusiastic newcomer to major gift development who demonstrates the talent to succeed. We will support your growth toward achieving fundraising success and, eventually, securing a permanent major gift officer opportunity within MPR|APM or another organization.  

Reports to the Director of Major & Planned Giving, who will create the work plan, guide and manage the ADO.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Working in close coordination with Development Research and the Major Gifts Team, the ADO will Qualify high capacity members for increased major giving from a list of provided prospects by MPR|APM Development Research.
  • The ADO would conduct a systematic checklist of outreach steps within a certain period to attempt to engage each prospective donor more deeply in the work of MPR|APM.
  • ADO would primarily aim to increase restricted and unrestricted operating support initially but would naturally evolve into securing major and planned gifts.
  • The ADO partner closely with Development Officers'through both 1:1 meetings and biweekly Development Officer Team meetings'to learn the nuances of qualifying and cultivating prospects.
  • The ADO will also partner closely with Development Research to obtain new names of prospects for qualification and to report findings of the prior outreach efforts. Goal is to build toward a full portfolio of 125-150 active prospective supporters.
  • Attend relevant training sessions and conferences to facilitate understanding of the non-profit philanthropic culture, and to hasten growth.
  • Meet specified donors in-person, over the phone or during special events to converse with them toward deepening their engagement at MPR|APM.
  • Working with Major Gift Officers and Development Research to develop and implement a donor engagement tracking system, that, over a 6 9-month period, to qualify donors as major gift prospects.
  • Work with other Major and Planned Giving staff on various tasks, projects, and events as needed.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Degree or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience in philanthropy and relationship development, or an allied field such as sales or clergy or volunteer fundraising, that is sufficient to indicate strong interest and capability to specialize in major gift development from individuals.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Demonstrate the confidence, ambition, curiosity and earnestness to grow into a fundraising professional, which includes:
    • Engaging and working effectively colleagues across MPR|APM, including Program/Content leaders, senior management, and volunteers to advance major donor relationships.
    • Conduct 1:1, in-person meetings to engage donors and move toward their deeper engagement at MPR|APM, soliciting gifts as appropriate in the cultivation cycle
    • Steward donors who increase their support, leading to a growing relationship and larger contributions over time.
    • Grow the ADO's understanding of philanthropy and MPR|APM's mission and programs to effectively serve donors and increase one's effectiveness in this important role
  • Must have strong written, phone and conversation skills.
  • Must be well-organized, fastidious and timely about recording every attempted donor activity in the CRM database, Salesforce.
  • Must continually remain up to date on what is happening at MPR now and in the future and communicate this information to MPR supporters.
  • Must be both a team player, yet self-driven and confident to execute on the strategies and work plans provided.
  • Frequent attendance expected at special events, including nights and occasional weekends, to host and meet MPR's best donors and members.
  • Must learn the Kling Public Media Center well to lead effective and regular tours of visiting donors, which are another primary engagement tool.
  • Continuously and actively engage with MPR|APM content; be able to speak to offerings and content in an informed manner with donors.
