Position Summary:

Marketplace's podcast Make Me Smart is looking for an associate producer for a temporary, full-time assignment through January 2020. As Associate Producer, you'd work on the team that makes Make Me Smart, a weekly podcast about the economy, technology and culture.

We're looking for a creative producer who has excellent production chops; is a fierce booker, audio editor, and researcher; is well organized and detail-oriented; follows podcasts; and is able to thrive working in a small, collaborative team-environment. Each of our production teams are small, so you'd be expected to take an active role in every part of the process, including pitching stories and themes, booking, editing audio, and finding meaningful ways to engage with our audience, who are an integral part of our show.

This position will be either an Associate Producer I OR Associate Producer II-level position depending upon the most qualified candidate's experience.

The Associate Producer II is a higher-level position that requires "Four or more years' radio production, news gathering, editorial or related professional experience" and varies from the Associate Producer I to include the following attributes in addition to those outlined under "Position Responsibility:"

Position Responsibility:

  • Research topics and fact check stories.
  • Book and pre-interview guests.
  • Manage host and staff schedules for bookings and team meetings.
  • Help shape the sound and structure of podcasts, working with Senior Producer, using a variety of tape appropriate for podcast.
  • Participate in group edits, and use feedback to edit interviews, pieces, and episodes.
  • Pitch stories to small team.
  • Field produce interviews outside of the studio, along with other show segments as required.
  • Find and cut for the best interview and tape moments.
  • Trains to direct show rolls, chooses music; maintains audio quality control; schedules studio time.
  • Writes scripts and prepares stories and episodes for final mix, live broadcast, digital, other platforms.
  • Help coordinate special projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

Associate Producer II

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience
  • 4+ years of relevant work experience in audio or radio.
  • Experience editing digital audio.
  • Experience working on a show or podcast, preferably national.

Associate Producer I

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience in audio or radio.
  • Experience editing digital audio.
  • Experience working on a show or podcast, preferably national.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Dynamic storytelling ability.
  • Ability to quickly write and edit smart, compelling content for a variety of platforms.
  • Ability to prioritize among competing tasks.
  • High editorial and audio standards.
  • Production experience in digital audio or radio.
  • Resourcefulness and ability to problem-solve.
  • Independence, positive attitude, initiative and excellent judgment.
  • Field production experience, preferred.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Interest and ability to pitch in where needed and take on new duties as assigned.
