Your Role:

American Public Media Call to Mind is searching for an experienced broadcast and live events producer. Call to Mind is a five-year mental health media initiative and this is an essential role on our growing team. Our mission is to foster new conversations about mental health. As the Events Producer, you will plan, develop, produce, and execute 9-12 annual national events and additional MPR events over a two-year period beginning Fall 2019 and continuing into 2021 as part of a multi-platform public media initiative engaging communities nationwide on The Youth Mental Health Crisis. 

In each market we will seek to partner with and use the support of local public media stations as well as their relationships within the community including schools, youth and adult organizations, local talent, etc. The events will be produced in collaboration with WETA and other major organizations working in mental health. The goal of this collaboration is to reach youth and parents, guardians, family members, educators and community organizations and employers to increase knowledge (mental health IQ) and engagement (mental health EQ). The live events will focus on a topic relevant to each given region, with a plan for recording and producing content for broadcast and/or publication with our platform partners. Event format could include moderated expert panels, TED talk-style programs or podcast shows. The events will leverage experts, regional leaders and key community voices to raise awareness about mental health as well as leverage the power of storytelling to build empathy and foster engagement and may blend performances by national or local celebrities as appropriate.

Position Duration: 2 years

Position Responsibility:

  • Works in direct partnership with regional public radio and television stations to develop compelling and regionally relevant mental health events appropriate for recording and broadcast/publication.
  • Initiates and researches ideas, experts, local personalities to participate in the event.
  • Pre-interview and book top-notch guests.
  • Assemble briefing files for hosts.
  • Develop run of show plans.
  • Manage production walk-throughs, stage directions & technical issues for live event, recording, and production.
  • Develop description of event that can used in marketing and promo materials.
  • Coordinate event details with partners including WETA, other partners and local public media.
  • Edit event recording for on air broadcast/publication.
  • Develop, manage, and report on event budgets.
  • Maintain relationships with technical staff, production support staff and audio engineers.
  • Manage logistical details for all events including contact information, signage, merchandise, and media needs.
  • Secure event participant contract information.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in broadcasting, journalism or related field; OR equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years of related work experience providing production and live event support and/or broadcast journalism work experience.
  • Experience in broadcast news production.
  • Experience in event production.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to produce programs and live events that meet APM standards.
  • Interest in mental health.
  • Ability to evaluate content/quality/sound/video and act decisively.
  • Strong writing and copy-editing skills.
  • Ability to think and plan strategically.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at once.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships.
  • Ability to maintain high journalistic and production standards under deadline pressure.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience booking guests or handling logistics for programs or events.
  • Successful experience in field production.
  • Experience writing for broadcast, print or online news sources.
  • Digital Editing skills (ProTools, Dalet or similar programs).
