Who We Are:

Southern California Public Radio (SCPR) is a member-supported public media network whose mission is to strengthen the civic and cultural bonds that unite Southern California's diverse communities by providing the highest quality news and information service on air at 89.3 KPCC, online at LAist.com and through KPCC In Person. Since our founding in 1999, SCPR has been a fast growing, innovative, multi-platform public service newsroom. Every day, our staff helps audiences catch up on the latest headlines, solve the complexities of life in Southern California, and connect curious communities to one another.

Your Role:

Southern California's sky-high housing costs are changing how we live and who can afford to keep a roof over their head. Our housing reporter will help us understand what got us here, the new pressures around the corner, and help identify potential paths forward. 

Together with SCPR's newly formed team focused on housing and homelessness, this reporter will be responsible for exploring and unpacking the many questions our audience has about housing costs. They will take a deeper look at the winners and losers in today's housing market. They will shine a light on the incentives and disincentives at play with housing permitting and construction. They will help our audience understand why housing in Los Angeles is so expensive, how those pressures are shaping Southern California, and what politicians, organizations and individuals can do.

We are looking for a reporter that is a willing collaborator. Because housing is such an essential story in Southern California we anticipate this reporter will work with colleagues across the newsroom on a regular basis. Like all of our reporters at SCPR, the housing reporter will be expected to build engagement into the reporting process, actively listening to our current and future audiences for story ideas, reporting leads and community expertise. 

Ideally, our new housing reporter will have experience using and working with data. We want this reporter to break news and affect policy. Our hope is that this reporter will partner regularly with our data journalists to tell human-centered stories with strong data elements, stories that both show the problem (or solution) and demonstrate its extent and impact.

Position Responsibility: 

  • Work with community members to identify what they are curious about as it relates to housing issues.
  •  Become an expert on housing issues in Southern California.
  • Originate, research, write and produce stand-out content for both KPCC and LAist. 75% of your work should be enterprise.
  • Join KPCC's on-air hosts for live interviews.
  • Conduct field and in-studio interviews, gather sound and scenes for broadcast stories. 
  • Assemble, write, edit, voice and mix great audio stories, the kind that make people stop to listen.
  • Write and edit compelling digital stories with visual and interactive elements, the kind that people will take the time to finish.
  • Collaborate with editors and producers to amplify and distribute stories to the broadest possible audience.
  • Offer story ideas, guidance and subject matter expertise to your SCPR colleagues.
  • Ensure that all stories comply with SCPR standards and practices, including standards of accuracy, fairness and balance.
  • Participate in newsroom trainings. 
  • Cover breaking news events including those not on your assigned beat.
  • Pitch specials and projects and big ideas. We love big ideas!
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Three or more years' experience reporting or similar experience, including experience covering a beat.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Strong language skills, including writing, proof reading and clear speaking ability.
  • Experience in journalism, including writing, interviewing, and editing.
  • Experience requesting and working with public records.
  • Experience writing in-depth, enterprise stories.
  • Deep commitment to maintaining the highest ethical standards.
  • Independence, initiative and good judgment.
  • Openness to collaboration in and outside SCPR.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure.
  • Willingness to tackle complex stories with an open mind.
  • Experience with audio software production tools like Audition or Pro Tools.
  • Good interpersonal skills. Be nice!
  • A desire to provide our L.A. community with great local news.
  • Become and remain a member in good standing of SAG-AFTRA by the thirtieth (30th) day of employment.

Preferred Skills and Experience: 

  • Fluency in Spanish or other non-English languages commonly spoken in Southern California.
  • Knowledge and expertise about California housing issues.
  • Extensive knowledge of Los Angeles and Southern California.
  • Experience with research databases like Lexis-Nexis.
  • Comfort working with and analyzing data sets.
