Who we are:

The APM Research Lab informs and equips the communities we serve with original and curated research. Our work helps inform journalists, civic and business leaders, and others who want to know what the best research has to say about challenges and opportunities facing families, communities, and organizations throughout the nation. We tackle numerous topics including health, education, the workforce, demographics, equity, and political analysis - and are building our portfolio every day (www.apmresearchlab.org). This position will contribute to APM Research Lab's growing national reputation for informing a wide variety of news outlets, both within and outside of American Public Media, as well as the broader public. Intern, Digital Communications - APM Research Lab

This is an essential communications support position for the fast-paced APM Research Lab team. This position will build necessary capacity to increase the Lab's relevance and reach in the research community and media world and raising our visibility locally and nationally. 

 

Key Learning Goals:

  1. How to effectively communicate and distribute research findings for broad public understanding, including preparing web and social media content.
  2. Deepen understanding of key demographic, economic, educational, environmental, health, political and other trends that the Research Lab is monitoring and reporting on.
  3. Gain exposure to data and statistical analysis, survey research, data visualization and other technical skills used by the team.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to and learn from a dynamic research start-up embedded in a nationally renowned media organization, with numerous opportunities for professional growth, networking, support, and fun.
  • Prepare and strategically disseminate social media content on numerous platforms to grow and engage the Lab's audience.
  • Create web pages and content, newsletters, audio clips, and visual displays of research findings.
  • Support the team as needed by reviewing data and content for accuracy and clarity.

Required Qualifications:

  • Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors in an undergraduate or Master's program OR have earned a degree within the last 12 months.
  • Must have completed some coursework in at least one of the following: communications, journalism, digital media, sociology, public health, public policy, economics, statistics, or related disciplines.
  • Professional or personal proficiency with one or more social media platforms.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Experience / aptitude for creating graphs to display data.
  • Extremely detail-oriented individual.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Self-directed but willing to ask for help and direction as needed.
  • Enthusiasm for our tagline of "bringing facts into focus."

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience overseeing social media strategies, writing for publication, or copy-editing.
  • Experience with a website content management system (CMS) such as Wordpress, Squarespace, etc.
  • Skills in data analysis, programming, design, infographics, digital displays, data visualization, and/or interactives (please detail).
  • Experience analyzing large datasets using statistical software such as SPSS, SAS, STATA, or R.
  • Audio editing background.
  • Fluency in a language other than English.
