Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) is one of the nation's premier public radio stations producing programming for radio, digital and live audiences and operates a 46-station radio network serving nearly all of Minnesota and parts of surrounding states. Reaching 1 million listeners each week, MPR and its three regional services 'MPR NewsClassical MPR and The Current' produce programming for radio, digital and live audiences.

Your Role: 

As the Senior Producer, Classical, you are a content producer working across Classical MPR/APM's radio, digital, and live-events platforms to realize ambitious audience-growth goals. Your priority will be in making new content for new audiences in support of Performance Today and Classical 24, which have a weekly cume of 2.5M. You'll collaborate with the nation's most accomplished team of producers, announcers, and classical-music managers, bringing their ideas and your own to fruition. Leading with creativity and risk-taking, you'll make remarkable experiences for audiences and APM-affiliate program directors. And you have a track record of superb attention to detail and execution of high-impact media projects. 

Position Responsibility: 

  • Create audio, video, and written content for radio and digital platforms, prioritizing initiatives for new audiences
  • Close collaboration with APM Distribution to support and grow carriage of national programs like Performance Today
  • Produce live off-site broadcasts and events in support of Classical MPR, and its growing portfolio of education and outreach initiatives
  • Produce special programming for regional and national distribution, i.e. one-hour holiday specials, limited series, modules
  • Contribute programming ideas openly and freely, participating in planning sessions
  • Assist staff in bringing their audience-growth ideas to fruition
  • Create and maintain positive working relationships with a variety of regional, national, and international classical music groups and presenters
  • Foster a creative and productive work environment. 
  • Serve on strategic company-wide committees and projects as assigned
  • Hire, supervise, train and manage direct staff through coaching, mentorship, performance meetings and on-going feedback.  Involve HR on performance issues as needed.
  • Coordinate recording and distribution agreements with regional and national artists and presenters
  • Research and write scripts for programs, promos and fundraising programs as needed.
  • Assist MPR engineers as needed in making field recordings
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor's degree in music, media-arts or related areas, or equivalent experience
  • Seven or more years experience in all facets of classical music audio production or related experience.
  • Three years of supervisory/management experience; must demonstrate an ability to foster high standards and an ability to coach, inspire and lead. 

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: 

  • Delight in sharing classical music with as wide an audience as possible
  • Proven ability to conceive, plan, and execute a variety of broadcast and non-broadcast projects
  • Passion for and deep knowledge of classical music
  • Fluency in digital editing, i.e. ProTools, plus packages like Microsoft Office
  • Leadership skills and ability to recruit, coach and develop a high performing team
  • Ability to consistently work well with others and to inspire and lead the staff
  • Ease at critically evaluating classical music performances
  • Dedication to quality and attention to detail while working in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment
  • Strong sense of initiative (Self-starter, self-directed)
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining effective communication and accountability
  • Strong organizational skills; ability to work on several projects concurrently
  • Strong communication, interviewing skills; writing and editing skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of colleagues and departments
  • Resourcefulness and ability to problem-solve
  • Familiarity with broadcast and online rights management
  • Project management skills
  • Flexible under daily deadline pressure, able to work effectively and collaboratively with hosts and other staff
