Glen Nelson Center invests in entrepreneurial ventures that serve new and diverse audiences while strengthening public media. We accomplish our goals through strategic investments in companies at the frontier of media and technology and by founding new for-profit and nonprofit ventures in support of American Public Media and its mission.

 

Fellow, Entrepreneurship

The Entrepreneurship Fellow will support the work of Glen Nelson Center, and its portfolio companies and programs. The position will focus on implementation and coordination of the Ventures in Residence program, an already-running, yearlong cohort-based Accelerator program for 10 companies (nonprofit, for-profit and internal APM programs). The position will also explore and develop revenue strategies as well as identify and pursue new business opportunities for Glen Nelson Center portfolio businesses including Lunar Startups and NewSignal Studios. 

 

Key Learning Goals:

  • Program Coordination: Coordinate and implement the Ventures In Residence Program, which involves monthly business strategy meetings with 10 local startups (nonprofit, for-profit and internal APM programs).
  • Business Strategy: Involved in developing strategic plans for Glen Nelson Center businesses (Lunar Startups, NewSignal Studios, Ventures in Residence).
  • Opportunity Identification: Develop a deep understand of a variety of industries and identify business opportunities connected to Glen Nelson Center portfolio companies.
  • Pitch Presentations: Develop pitches to be presented both internally and externally to secure support for new business opportunities.
  • Deal Closing: Involved in negotiating the terms of potential deals and will support Glen Nelson Center staff in closing deals, as appropriate.

Responsibilities:

The Entrepreneurship Fellow will:

  1. Become a subject matter expert on our programs, processes and operations, and remain up to date on industry trends.
  2. Coordinate and lead monthly cohort wide business strategy meetings and monthly business coaching meetings with the 10 members of the Ventures in Residence program.
  3. Research prospective accounts, pursue leads and follow through to a successful agreement.
  4. Understand the target markets, including industry, company, project, company contacts and which market strategies can be used to attract development leads.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree or currently enrolled in a graduate program or have 3-5 years of related work experience
  • Previous sales and/or business development experience
  • Previous program coordination experience
  • Excellent organizational skills, with emphasis on priorities and goal setting
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and statistical analysis software
  • Superior presentation and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Technical skills required to understand and propose products or solutions by focusing on client requirements
  • Ability to communicate information, whether technical or non-technical to staff members and customers, in a clear and concise manner
  • Demonstrated interest in entrepreneurship
  • Ability to manage time and task load independently
  • Ability to learn new skills in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated dedication to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace
  • Right to work in the U.S. that is not based solely on possession of a student visa or a visa sponsored by a third-party employer.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the media industry
